What is an HMI developer?

An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) Developer designs, develops, and maintains user interfaces for industrial systems, machines, or automation processes. They work with software tools to create intuitive and efficient control panels that operators use to monitor and interact with machinery. HMI Developers often collaborate with engineers and technicians to ensure seamless integration with PLCs, SCADA systems, and other automation components. Their role requires expertise in UI/UX design, programming languages, and industry-specific protocols to enhance usability and efficiency in industrial environments.

What does an HMI developer do?

HMI Developers typically spend their days designing, developing, and testing graphical user interfaces for industrial or automation systems, ensuring both functionality and usability. They often work closely with control engineers, project managers, and end-users to gather requirements and implement features that meet operational needs. Regular tasks may include configuring visual displays, integrating real-time data from machinery or processes, troubleshooting issues, and updating existing systems based on user feedback. Collaboration and continuous communication with other team members are key aspects of ensuring successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HMI developer?

To thrive as an HMI Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Java, or Python, and a solid understanding of human-machine interface concepts, automation systems, and UI/UX design principles. Familiarity with industry-standard HMI development tools (e.g., Siemens WinCC, Wonderware, Rockwell FactoryTalk) and protocols like OPC or SCADA, as well as relevant certifications, is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing intuitive and reliable interfaces that optimize user experience and ensure safe, efficient industrial operations.

Job description

Job Title: Lead Industrial Automation & Integration Specialist
Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Industrial Automation & Integration Specialist to drive the design, development, and commissioning of our most complex industrial control systems. You will serve as the technical authority for our automation platform, responsible for end-to-end architecture-from PLC logic and HMI interface design to network integration and enterprise-level data connectivity.
This is a senior-level role for an automation expert who thrives on technical autonomy. You will lead the implementation of scalable, modular control solutions, oversee the integration of field devices with enterprise systems (Historians/MES), and provide critical leadership to our engineering team. If you are passionate about building robust, high-reliability automation systems and enjoy the challenges of large-scale site commissioning, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Automation Architecture & Development
• Control Strategy: Design and develop advanced PLC programs using structured, modular, and scalable architectures. Establish and enforce programming standards to ensure long-term maintainability.
• HMI/SCADA Systems: Lead the development of intuitive and high-performance HMI/SCADA interfaces. Focus on usability, data visualization, and operational reliability.
• System Integration: Architect holistic solutions that bridge the gap between PLC/HMI layers and higher-level enterprise systems (databases, historians, and reporting platforms).
Project Leadership & Commissioning
• Full-Lifecycle Ownership: Manage the entire project lifecycle, from conceptual design and electrical strategy to onsite testing, validation, and final commissioning.
• Technical Authority: Review and approve control strategies, electrical designs, and system documentation. Ensure that all automation solutions meet strict safety standards, industrial regulations, and cybersecurity protocols.
• Leadership & Mentorship: Act as the technical lead for automation projects. Mentor junior and intermediate engineers, providing guidance on design best practices and troubleshooting methodology.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Associate degree (A.A.S.) in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
• Experience Baseline: Minimum of eight (8) years of deep, hands-on experience in PLC/HMI programming and industrial automation.
• Technical Mastery: Expert-level PLC programming capability and proven experience leading complex system commissioning and troubleshooting.
• Integration Expertise: Strong grasp of industrial communication protocols, control system design, and the interaction between field-level automation and plant-level systems.
Preferred Attributes
• Extensive experience with multiple industry-standard PLC/SCADA platforms and high-speed automation systems.
• Experience integrating automation systems with MES and SQL-based databases.
• Knowledge of functional safety standards (e.g., SIL, ISO) and industrial cybersecurity best practices.
• A "consultative" approach: You can collaborate effectively with project managers, clients, and vendors to deliver solutions that meet both business and technical objectives.
