What is an HMI Developer job?

An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) Developer designs, develops, and maintains user interfaces for industrial systems, machines, or automation processes. They work with software tools to create intuitive and efficient control panels that operators use to monitor and interact with machinery. HMI Developers often collaborate with engineers and technicians to ensure seamless integration with PLCs, SCADA systems, and other automation components. Their role requires expertise in UI/UX design, programming languages, and industry-specific protocols to enhance usability and efficiency in industrial environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hmi Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HMI Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Java, or Python, and a solid understanding of human-machine interface concepts, automation systems, and UI/UX design principles. Familiarity with industry-standard HMI development tools (e.g., Siemens WinCC, Wonderware, Rockwell FactoryTalk) and protocols like OPC or SCADA, as well as relevant certifications, is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing intuitive and reliable interfaces that optimize user experience and ensure safe, efficient industrial operations.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an HMI Developer?

HMI Developers typically spend their days designing, developing, and testing graphical user interfaces for industrial or automation systems, ensuring both functionality and usability. They often work closely with control engineers, project managers, and end-users to gather requirements and implement features that meet operational needs. Regular tasks may include configuring visual displays, integrating real-time data from machinery or processes, troubleshooting issues, and updating existing systems based on user feedback. Collaboration and continuous communication with other team members are key aspects of ensuring successful project delivery.

Job description

FIBER OPTICS TECHNICIAN Construction | Chandler, AZ | Full-Time Contract
ABOUT OUR CLIENT
Our client is a privately held Systems Integration and Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Construction firm that has been delivering industrial automation solutions for over 30 years. Headquartered in Texas with offices across the country, they serve a broad range of industrial sectors including mission-critical data centers, oil & gas, semiconductor fabrication, battery storage, water & wastewater, and district energy. Their full-service capabilities span project management, instrumentation and electrical design, systems engineering, PLC/SCADA/HMI programming, UL-listed control panel fabrication, and electrical construction - all under one roof. The company is deeply committed to customer focus, total system responsibility, and delivering excellence on every project from initial design through post-project maintenance.
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a skilled Fiber Optics Technician to support instrumentation and controls work on active industrial and commercial construction projects. In this role, you will be responsible for the setup, configuration, testing, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems at job sites - ensuring everything from field devices to PLC/HMI systems is properly installed, wired, and functioning to spec. Your work plays a critical role in bringing new systems online safely and correctly.
Day to day, you will be learning site operational processes, reviewing plans and schematics, connecting and calibrating instruments, performing electrical terminations, and troubleshooting issues during the start-up phase. You will also contribute to project documentation including submittals, specification reviews, and drawing assessments. When systems are live, you may be called upon for after-hours support and service calls, making reliability and responsiveness key traits for this position.
The ideal candidate is technically sharp, comfortable working independently in the field, and has hands-on experience with instrumentation setup, structured cabling, and basic PLC/HMI programming. Relevant certifications such as CFOT or BICSI are a strong plus. If you take pride in precise, quality-driven work and want to be part of a team delivering complex automation projects across high-demand industries, we want to hear from you.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Learn site operational processes to understand desired objectives and functions of instrumentation and controls; review plans and schematics.
  • Connect instruments and confirm proper operation in the field.
  • Set up instrumentation at job sites; configure instruments using calibration procedures, start-up reports, documentation, schematics, and manufacturers' specifications.
  • Perform basic PLC and HMI programming tasks as required.
  • During the start-up phase, perform electrical terminations and testing to verify that wiring and controls are properly installed and executing the correct functions.
  • Verify and test all points of the design layout.
  • Troubleshoot problems during start-up; perform repairs including review and adjustments to programming where necessary.
  • Perform service calls and work orders during standard hours as well as on-call periods for after-hours support; troubleshoot wiring, equipment, and PLC/HMI code.
  • Contribute to project deliverables such as submittals, specification reviews, and assessment of drawings and schematics.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / SKILLS
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation setup, configuration, and calibration in an industrial or commercial construction environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and manufacturers' specifications.
  • Experience performing electrical terminations and point-to-point testing.
  • Basic proficiency with PLC and HMI programming.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for wiring, instrumentation, and control system issues.
  • Ability to learn and understand site-specific operational processes and control system objectives quickly.
  • Willingness and availability to support after-hours on-call service needs.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

NICE-TO-HAVES
  • CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) - standard baseline certification recognized by the Fiber Optic Association (FOA).
  • BICSI Installer (Inst1/Inst2) or BICSI Technician certification - highly valued for commercial and industrial structured cabling work.
  • Experience with SCADA systems or DCS platforms.
  • Familiarity with commissioning documentation and start-up reporting processes.
  • Background in data center, oil & gas, or semiconductor fabrication environments.

EDUCATION
High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical training, vocational certification, or an associate's degree in electronics, instrumentation, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent hands-on field experience will be considered.
PAY & BENEFITS
  • $30-$36 per hour, commensurate with experience.
  • Full benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus 401(k).
