What is an HMI designer?

An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) Designer is responsible for creating user-friendly interfaces that allow operators to interact efficiently with machines, systems, or software. They focus on usability, functionality, and aesthetics while considering the needs of end-users. HMI Designers work with engineers, developers, and UX/UI specialists to develop visual and interactive elements for industrial equipment, automotive systems, medical devices, and other technology-driven fields. Their role is critical in enhancing user experience, safety, and productivity.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an HMI designer?

As an HMI Designer, your daily tasks often include collaborating with engineers, product managers, and end-users to define interface requirements; designing, prototyping, and iterating graphical user interfaces for industrial systems; and ensuring the usability and functionality of control panels or touchscreens. You may also conduct user testing, collect feedback, and refine designs based on real-world use cases. Additionally, you will document design specifications and provide support during system deployment. This role requires balancing technical feasibility with user experience to deliver safe and effective solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the HMI designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HMI Designer, you need expertise in human-machine interface principles, interaction design, and a strong understanding of user experience (UX), typically backed by a degree in industrial design, human factors, or a related field. Familiarity with HMI development tools such as Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, or AVEVA Wonderware, as well as proficiency in prototyping software, is highly valued, and certifications in UX or related platforms can be advantageous. Strong collaboration, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help HMI Designers excel in cross-functional teams and meet project goals. These competencies ensure the creation of intuitive, safe, and efficient interfaces that optimize user performance in industrial and technical environments.

Job description

HP PageWide Web Press Controls Systems Engineer

Description -

The Industrial Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, commissioning, and supporting industrial machine control systems that operate highspeed production equipment, with a direct impact on system uptime, product quality, and production throughput. This role focuses on delivering modular, scalable, and standardized control architectures that enable reliable operation, faster commissioning, and efficient longterm support across machine platforms.

The position emphasizes configurationdriven control solutions and reusable software components over monolithic, custom PLC implementations. Working closely with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and operations teams, the Industrial Controls Engineer ensures that control system design supports stable continuous operation, precise process control, and rapid fault recovery in complex industrial environments.

The role operates within an Agile SCRUM development model, contributing to sprint planning, backlog refinement, and delivery commitments to ensure predictable, incremental delivery of control system capabilities aligned with program milestones.

Key Responsibilities

- PLC & Control Software Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain PLCbased control systems for industrial machinery
  • Implement modular, reusable, and configurable control architectures to support scalability across platforms
  • Develop sequencing logic, state machines, and process control aligned with equipment performance requirements
  • Promote software standardization and best practices across product lines

- HMI & Operator Interface Development

  • Develop and maintain operator interfaces for machine control and monitoring
  • Implement alarm visualization, user roles, diagnostics, and recipe management
  • Ensure HMI designs support usability, maintainability, and consistent operator workflows

- Motion, Drives & Industrial Networking

  • Configure and commission motion systems, drives, and industrial I/O
  • Integrate industrial communication protocols for machinetomachine and higherlevel system connectivity
  • Tune and validate system performance to meet throughput and quality targets

Machine Safety & Functional Safety

  • Design, implement, and validate machine safety solutions in compliance with applicable safety standards
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical teams to ensure safety architecture supports both compliance and machine performance
  • Support safety commissioning, validation, and documentation activities

- Commissioning & Debug

  • Commission machines in factory and customer environments
  • Diagnose and resolve control system, motion, and HMI issues
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT)
  • Optimize system behavior using diagnostics, logging, and performance data

- Electrical & System Integration

  • Collaborate with electrical engineering on control system design and compliance
  • Interface with machine safety systems
  • Coordinate with mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and service teams to ensure system readiness

Education & Experience Recommended

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline
(or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Typically 4-7 years of experience in industrial automation, machine controls, or PLC software development
(3-5 years with an advanced degree)
  • Experience in OEM machine builder or highspeed industrial equipment environments preferred

Knowledge & Skills

- Core Skills
