How much do hmc operator jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for hmc operator in the United States is $23.60, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $26.92 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HMC Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HMC (Horizontal Machining Center) Operator, you need a solid understanding of machining processes, blueprint reading, and precision measurement, often backed by a technical diploma or certification in machining. Familiarity with CNC programming, G-code, and operation of various machine tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication help operators ensure quality output and maintain workflow. These skills are crucial for maintaining high productivity, minimizing errors, and ensuring the safe, efficient operation of complex machinery.

What are some typical daily challenges an HMC Operator might face on the job?

As an HMC Operator, you may encounter challenges such as ensuring machines are calibrated accurately, troubleshooting unexpected equipment malfunctions, and maintaining consistent production quality under tight deadlines. You'll often need to interpret complex technical drawings and adjust settings for different materials or part specifications. Effective communication with engineers and quality control teams is essential to quickly resolve issues and keep production on schedule.

What are HMC Operators?

HMC Operators are professionals responsible for operating Horizontal Machining Centers (HMCs), which are advanced computer-controlled machines used to precisely cut and shape metal and other materials. Their duties include setting up the machine, loading materials, monitoring production, and performing routine maintenance. HMC Operators also ensure that parts meet quality specifications by measuring and inspecting finished products. Strong technical skills and attention to detail are essential for this role.

What jobs pay $3,000 a day?

HMC Operators typically do not earn $3,000 a day; such high daily earnings are usually associated with specialized roles like senior executives, high-level consultants, or certain freelance professionals. In the industrial sector, highly experienced operators or those working in high-risk environments with overtime may approach high daily rates, but $3,000 per day is uncommon for standard HMC (Horizontal Machining Center) operators. Earnings depend on experience, location, and industry demand.

Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented CNC Machinist specializing in large-scale horizontal machining. This role is responsible for the end-to-end setup and operation of a Toyoda FH800 Horizontal Machining Center (HMC) with a Fanuc-based control system. You will be tasked with transforming raw materials into high-precision components, ensuring the highest standards of quality and efficiency are met.
In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:
  • Setup: Perform complex machine setups including the installation of tombstones, fixtures, and specialized work-holding devices on the Toyoda FH800's 800mm pallets.
  • Tooling: Select, assemble, and preset cutting tools. Load tools into the Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) and input tool offsets (length and diameter) into the CNC controller.
  • Operation: Execute production runs, monitoring the machine for unusual noises, vibrations, or tool wear. Perform mid-program restarts and manual data input (MDI) as required.
  • Quality Control: Inspect first-off and production parts using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, bore gages, and CMM reports) to ensure adherence to tight tolerances.
  • Maintenance: Perform daily preventative maintenance, including checking coolant levels, lubricating ways, and clearing chips from the FH800's high-capacity chip conveyor system.
  • Process Improvement: Collaborate with programming and engineering teams to optimize feed rates, speeds, and cycle times for improved throughput.

Who You Are:
  • You quickly and decisively act in fact-changing, unexpected situations. You adjust communication content and style to meet the needs of diverse collaborators.

For This Role, You Will Need:
  • 3+ years of Toyoda Experience: Proven experience operating and setting up Toyoda FH-series machines or similar heavy-duty HMCs.
  • Control Systems: Proficiency in Fanuc 31i-Model B or similar Toyoda-specific CNC controls. Ability to read and edit G-code and M-code.
  • Blueprints: Advanced ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols.
  • Metrology: Expert use of manual inspection tools and an understanding of surface finish requirements.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to handle large workpieces and perform setups involving heavy lifting (within safety limits) and overhead crane operation for loading pallets.

Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart:
  • Problem Solver: Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues or programming errors on the fly.
  • Safety Conscious: Strict adherence to PPE requirements and machine guarding protocols.
  • Efficiency Mindset: Understanding of lean manufacturing principles to minimize setup downtime (SMED).
