The Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture invites applications for Editor of the William and Mary Quarterly (WMQ). Since 1892, this globally respected journal has shaped the field through rigorous peer review, influential scholarship, and a commitment to advancing new historical perspectives. The Editor of the WMQ will lead one of the field's most influential publications and help shape the future of historical research and intellectual exchange.
The Editor of the WMQ will oversee all aspects of editorial vision, peer review, and production. The role includes close collaboration with authors, reviewers, editorial staff, and the Book Review Editor, as well as leadership in the annual WMQ-EMSI workshops.
Beyond the journal, the Editor will play a vital role in the intellectual community of the Omohundro Institute, contributing to a vibrant program of publications, lectures, conferences, and seminars. Jointly sponsored by William & Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Institute offers an exceptional environment for scholarly engagement and leadership. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; a strong record of scholarly publication and achievement in early American studies or a related field; and a demonstrated aptitude for sustained editorial work.
Additional responsibilities include teaching one course annually in the candidate's area of expertise, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, as appropriate, and participating fully in the intellectual and service activities of the home tenure department. The successful candidate will maintain an active and impactful research agenda that engages and inspires both undergraduate students and M.A./Ph.D. students. This is a 12-month, tenure-eligible faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor or advanced Associate Professor. The initial appointment is for a renewable 10-year term and is expected to begin on June 25, 2027

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time appointment begins (June 25, 2027).

  • A record of scholarly excellence and a demonstrated commitment to sustained editorial work evidenced by experience editing scholarly volumes, encyclopedias, handbooks, journals, or book series; serving as an editor or co-editor of scholarly publications; and/or contributing to the editorial direction and quality of academic publishing through service on editorial boardsor as peer reviewer

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate and graduate students.
