California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. Opened in 1965 and set at the foothills of the beautiful San Bernardino mountains, the university serves approximately 19,000 students. JOB SUMMARY
The Department of English at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor to begin August 2027. We seek a specialist in The Novel who would also regularly teach classes in the core of our major, such as Historical Approaches to Literature and Analysis of Fiction and Nonfiction. Secondary areas of expertise are welcome.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and master's level courses in a large, dynamic English department that includes Linguistics, Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, and Creative Writing. Applicants should show evidence of commitment to teaching diverse literatures and employing inclusive pedagogies. Additionally, we encourage applicants with an interest in linking their scholarship and/or teaching to public-facing projects or community engagement.
TYPICAL ACTIVITIES
The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate and master's courses based on their sub-specialization and departmental programmatic needs. The standard teaching assignment is four classes per semester, with a reduced assignment for the first two years.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A PhD in English Literature, Comparative Literature, or a closely related field is required by time of appointment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Evidence of promise in professional activities (including record of publication), evidence of a commitment to excellence in teaching, and evidence of a commitment to service to the University and the larger community.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of English offers a Bachelor of Arts in English, with concentrations in Literature, Creative Writing, Linguistics, and Rhetoric and Writing Studies; a Bachelor of Science in Computational Linguistics and AI; a Bachelor of Science in Speech Language Pathology; and a Master of Arts in English and Writing Studies with concentrations in Linguistics, Literature, Composition and Rhetoric, as well as Pedagogy and Public & Professional Writing. In addition, we offer minors in English, Border Studies, Creative Writing, Multimedia Storytelling, Disability Studies, Speech Language Pathology, and English Teacher Preparation; as well as certificates in Creative Writing, Public and Professional Writing, TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and Teaching Writing. The Department also sponsors an annual literary journal, The Pacific Review.
