Position description
The Department of the History of Art at the University of California, Riverside seeks a part-time Visiting Assistant Professor or Adjunct Assistant Professor* for the academic year 2026-2027 to teach four courses in art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While we are open to applications from multiple fields, extra consideration will be given to those addressing the arts of Europe and/or the United States. We especially welcome teaching that emphasizes global, colonial, and post-colonial perspectives on European and U.S. art. Proposed syllabi should be able to be listed as courses currently taught in the department, see course catalog
*Visiting Assistant Professor (for applicants NOT concurrently employed by UC at the time of appointment), and Adjunct Assistant Professor (for applicants concurrently employed by UC at the time of appointment).
We are looking for a dynamic teacher-scholar whose approach is attentive to leading issues in the discipline and their field of specialization.
A Ph.D. and teaching experience at the college or university level is required.
Responsibilities include teaching four courses in the quarter system--two undergraduate upper-division lectures (one in fall and one in spring), one TA-supported lower division lecture (winter), and one graduate-level seminar (spring). Other responsibilities include advising students and participating in department service. Please note: the fall course topic is already in place with students enrolled, Modern European Art 1: Nineteenth Century. Though not required, we are interested in scholars whose graduate seminar could integrate museum studies content, which is of interest to our current students.
The salary for each course is approximately $14,016.
