History Consulting information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a history consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a History Consultant, you need a strong background in historical research, analysis, and writing, typically supported by an advanced degree in history or a related field. Familiarity with archival databases, citation management tools, and sometimes digital humanities software is often required. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and attention to detail are essential soft skills that set standout consultants apart. These skills ensure accurate, insightful advice and clear presentation of historical findings for clients in academia, media, or public history projects.

What is the difference between History Consulting vs Historical Researcher?

AspectHistory ConsultingHistorical Researcher
Required CredentialsHistory degree, consulting experienceHistory degree, research skills
Work EnvironmentClient-facing, project-basedResearch-focused, academic or archival
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, museums, heritage organizationsUniversities, archives, research institutions

History Consulting involves advising clients on historical matters, often in a professional or commercial context, while a Historical Researcher conducts in-depth investigations into historical topics primarily for academic, archival, or publication purposes. Both roles require a strong background in history, but their work environments and objectives differ significantly.

What is history consulting?

History consulting involves using expertise in historical research and analysis to advise organizations, businesses, government agencies, or individuals. Consultants may help with projects like developing museum exhibits, researching corporate or property histories, creating educational materials, or supporting legal cases with historical context. They often work on a contract basis and tailor their services to client needs, making history accessible and relevant to contemporary issues.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in history consulting, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in history consulting often encounter challenges such as limited access to primary sources, tight project deadlines, and the need to communicate complex historical findings to non-expert clients. These challenges can be addressed by developing strong research networks, utilizing digital archives, and honing skills in clear, client-focused communication. Additionally, history consultants frequently work in interdisciplinary teams, so adaptability and collaboration are key to delivering successful project outcomes.

  • Work on credit projects under a manager; however, you will often work autonomously on certain aspects

  • Support many different types of financial institutions, over different geographies

  • Lead segments of engagements that will help you develop leadership abilities, including building client relationships and business relationships with key executives

  • Write and present clear and concise reports to provide meaningful recommendations to clients

  • Graduate degree or Professional certification a plus (i.e. - RMA CRC)

  • Underwriting, lending, or regulatory experience - not a role for a consumer finance background

  • Experience with a variety of loan products and industries

  • Working knowledge of SBA SOP is a plus

  • Understanding of credit processes, such as loan origination and underwriting; credit policies; portfolio management; allowance for loan and lease losses; loan review and remediation

  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state banking laws related to credit risk

  • Prior experience with risk ratings, risk rating methodology, and allowance methodology would be a plus

  • Strong written and verbal communication and comprehension both formally and informally to our clients and our teams, in a variety of formats and settings, including in interviews, meetings, calls, e-mails, reports, process narratives, presentations, etc.

  • Prior experience should include progressive responsibilities, including supervising and reviewing the work of others, and project management, including self-management of simultaneous work-streams and responsibilities

  • A self-starter who can prioritize multiple tasks, be resourceful and able to research and find solutions

  • Passionate about learning, meeting goals, and helping a team succeed

  • Willingness to travel
