Hippos, or hippopotamuses, are large, mostly herbivorous mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are known for their barrel-shaped bodies, large mouths and teeth, and mostly aquatic lifestyle, spending much of their time in rivers and lakes to keep cool. Despite their bulky size and short legs, hippos are fast runners on land and strong swimmers in water. They are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa due to their territorial nature and powerful jaws. Hippos play a vital role in their ecosystem by influencing river environments and providing nutrients for other wildlife.
