Highway Maintenance Craftsperson
Department of Public Works - Highway Division

Salary: $28.86 hourly
The Brookline DPW is seeking a skilled and reliable Highway Maintenance Craftsperson to support the construction, repair, and upkeep of roadways, sidewalks, and related infrastructure. This position performs skilled and semi-skilled labor, operates heavy equipment, and responds to weather-related and emergency conditions to ensure safe and accessible public ways.
Responsibilities include:
  • Constructing, fabricating, maintaining, and repairing bituminous and cement concrete roadways, sidewalks, pathways, and driveways.
  • Providing technical guidance and training to lower-grade staff as needed.
  • Operating dump trucks, front-end loaders, street sweepers, packers, and other departmental vehicles; performing routine safety inspections.
  • Completing labor-intensive tasks such as removing debris, repairing potholes and sidewalks, filling sand barrels, and resetting curbstones.
  • Using jackhammers, concrete saws, and other hand, power, and pneumatic tools.
  • Transporting and servicing dumpsters for schools and Town buildings; collecting rubbish and yard waste while ensuring compliance with disposal rules.
  • Operating sanders, plows, and loaders during snow and ice emergencies to clear and treat roadways.
  • Reporting observed issues, such as downed limbs, water main breaks, or damaged catch basins, to the appropriate departments.
  • Performing other similar or related duties as required.

Qualifications:
High school diploma; two years of experience performing labor work and driving heavy equipment and trucks; experience working with concrete and construction projects, roadway projects or utility projects and performing snow and ice removal; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class B and MA Hoisting Engineer's License required.
Applicants should have knowledge of safe equipment operation, work zone safety practices, concrete materials and conditions, and general construction codes. The successful candidate will be able to operate heavy equipment safely, work cooperatively with others, read and interpret plans, recognize equipment or vehicle maintenance needs, and perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions.
