Job Summary
Duties of the Charge/Code Capture Specialist include reviewing clinical documentation as appropriate to extract data and accurately assign proper facility level CPT based on set algorithm and coding metrics. Leveling requirements include knowledge of payer specific coding guidelines and evaluation, and management coding and procedural coding as required. Under the supervision of the HIM Coding Manager, performs duties assigned that include excellent communication, accurate leveling and data entry, and all essential duties of the department as required by the department director.
This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health's mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.
Essential Job Duties
  • Accurately assign appropriate facility levels and procedure codes for all ED/OBS service within accordance of the CPT and CMS guidelines.
  • Accurately assign appropriate E/M levels, OBS hours, and Injection and Infusions.
  • E/M Level assignment will be assigned based on the Augusta Health's charge capture criteria.
  • Understand and maintain education on all CPT/ICD-10/HCPCS guidelines, to include revisions, deletions, additions.
  • Make necessary changes to claims to ensure accurate billing regarding issues, proper code selection, and payer specific guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with providers/office manager/auditors/billing department to ensure the highest level of service is being captured.
  • Review providers dictation as needed to ensure all documentation is accurate.
  • Provide technical guidance to physicians and other department staff to include identifying and correcting errors, such as incomplete or missing documentation, instruction on proper code usage in accordance to guidelines, and maintaining an open line of communication at all times.

  • Experience: Two or more years of E/M leveling experience and at least one year of procedural coding experience
  • Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment
  • Familiarity with Augusta Health's systems, workflows, or organizational culture is a plus

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Requires good written, oral communication and interpersonal skills. ability to effectively communicate with all hospital practitioners is essential.
  • Demonstrates competency in the use of computer applications and grouper software, Medicare edits, and all coding and abstracting software and hardware currently in use by HIM.
  • Requires comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and disease processes.
  • Requires analytical ability to allow for interpretation of clinical data in all clinical specialties to determine appropriate code assignment.
  • Requires proficiency in abstracting chart data into computer module.
  • Requires ability to work independently, an eagerness to learn, attention to detail and good critical thinking skills.
