What is a highest attorney?

The term 'Highest Attorney' is not a standard job title in the legal field. It may refer to the highest-ranking legal official within an organization, government, or jurisdiction, such as the Attorney General in the United States or the Chief Legal Officer in a corporation. These individuals are responsible for overseeing legal strategy, providing legal advice, and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations. Their duties often include representing the organization or government in legal matters and managing teams of other attorneys.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a highest attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Highest Attorney (such as a Chief Legal Officer or General Counsel), you need an advanced law degree (JD), extensive legal experience, and bar admission, along with deep expertise in corporate or constitutional law. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management systems, and regulatory compliance tools is typically required. Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and strong negotiation and communication skills distinguish top performers in this position. These competencies are crucial for managing complex legal matters, advising executive leadership, and ensuring organizational compliance and risk mitigation.

What are some common challenges faced by the highest attorney in an organization, and how can they be prepared to address them?

The highest attorney, often serving as General Counsel or Chief Legal Officer, frequently faces challenges such as balancing legal risk with business objectives, managing a diverse legal team, and staying abreast of changing regulations. They must also coordinate with executives and other departments to ensure alignment on strategic decisions and legal compliance. Preparing for these challenges involves developing strong communication skills, building a robust understanding of the organization’s industry, and fostering a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

Experience in-house, with large employers, or on high-volume employment litigation or investigations portfolios is strongly preferred.
This role is onsite in Arlington, VA.
Specifically, the Employment Attorney will
  • Conduct and support workplace investigations involving allegations such as harassment, discrimination, retaliation, policy violations, employee misconduct, wage-and-hour concerns, and other employment-related issues.
  • Develop investigation plans, identify relevant witnesses and documents, conduct witness interviews, evaluate facts, prepare chronologies, and draft clear investigation summaries, findings, and recommendations where appropriate.
  • Support employment litigation matters, including case intake, fact development, litigation holds, document collection, discovery strategy, written discovery, pleadings, motions, witness preparation, depositions, settlement support, and matter closeout.
  • Assist with administrative charges and agency matters, including EEOC and state-agency responses, position statements, information requests, and related fact development.
  • Work within client-approved workflows, templates, playbooks, escalation protocols, and service-level expectations.
  • Identify legal, reputational, operational, privilege, and escalation issues and raise them to supervising attorneys or client stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including legal operations, project management, data, document review, and technology teams, to support efficient matter handling at scale.
  • Draft concise, practical, and client-ready work product that reflects strong legal judgment and attention to detail.
Experience
  • Approximately 5-8 years of employment law experience, preferably representing or advising employers.
  • Demonstrated workplace investigations experience is required, including experience interviewing witnesses, analyzing evidence, assessing credibility, and drafting investigation-related work product.
  • Experience with employment litigation, including discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, depositions, settlement strategy, and case management.
Skills for Success
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws, including anti-discrimination, anti-retaliation, leave, accommodation, wage-and-hour, and workplace conduct requirements.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a high-volume environment.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and sensitivity when handling confidential and legally sensitive workplace matters.
Technical Skills
  • Excellent MS Office skills - capable of preparing PowerPoint, Word, and Excel files without support.
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Located in the DC Metro area and willing to work onsite in Arlington full time.
Compensation
  • US national salary range: $130,000-160,000, based on job-related skills, experience, and level. In addition, Elevate offers full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package and PTO.
