How much do high throughput screening jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for high throughput screening in California is $23.62, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.75 and $27.98 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is high throughput screening in drug discovery?

High throughput screening (HTS) is a laboratory technique used in drug discovery to quickly test thousands to millions of chemical compounds for activity against a biological target. By using automated equipment, robotics, and data analysis tools, researchers can identify potential drug candidates more efficiently than traditional methods. HTS accelerates the early stages of drug development by providing rapid, large-scale screening, which helps scientists prioritize compounds for further study. This approach is widely used in pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies.

What are some common challenges faced in a high throughput screening role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in High Throughput Screening is managing large volumes of data generated from automated assays, which requires strong data analysis skills and attention to detail. Another challenge is ensuring assay reliability and minimizing variability, which often involves close collaboration with assay development scientists and automation engineers. Effective communication within multidisciplinary teams is essential to troubleshoot issues quickly and adapt protocols as needed. Staying organized and proactively addressing equipment maintenance can also help minimize downtime and improve screening efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a high throughput screening scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a High Throughput Screening Scientist, you need a solid background in biology or chemistry, experience with assay development, and often a relevant advanced degree. Familiarity with automated liquid handling systems, data analysis software, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is essential. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are critical for efficiently identifying potential drug candidates and ensuring accurate, reproducible results in a fast-paced research environment.

What is the difference between High Throughput Screening vs Laboratory Technician?

OmniAb consists of dynamic, collaborative and innovative team members that are passionate about contributing to the technological frontier of drug discovery and to the advancement of global human health. Together, with our partners, we are enabling the discovery of next-generation therapeutics.
About This Role
We're seeking a Field Engineer to support testing, QC, and field maintenance of OmniAb's xPloration™ high-throughput screening platform. This person will validate new hardware and software features in-house alongside the Technical Product Development team, run acceptance testing on new instruments before they ship, and travel to partner sites to install, maintain, and troubleshoot systems already in the field. The role also handles operational logistics including instrument and consumable shipments. This role works closely with the Field Applications Team and Technical Product Development team.
This role reports to the Senior Manager, Technical Product Development.
This is an onsite position based out of our Emeryville headquarters, with travel up to 50% to partner sites. This is a full-time position, and the office hours are between 8am-5pm PT.
What You'll Do
  • Test new xPloration™ hardware and software features in-house with the Technical Product Development team to identify issues before release.
  • Run acceptance testing and QC on new instruments before they ship, and document performance against spec.
  • Travel to partner sites to install, maintain, and repair xPloration™ instruments. Follow safety and quality standards in the lab and at partner sites.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software problems using logs, schematics, and factory protocols. Share findings with Field Applications Scientists and Technical Product Development so they can follow up with partners.
  • Coordinate instrument and consumable shipments, manage parts inventory, and track service activities.
  • Contribute to SOPs, service procedures, and other technical documentation.
  • Maintain accurate service records, installation reports, and QC documentation.
  • Build diagnostic tools that speed up issue resolution, strengthen our instrument and service data infrastructure, and apply AI and analytics to monitor performance, flag problems proactively, and turn field data into product improvements.
  • Other duties as required.

What You Bring
  • BSc in Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical field and 5+ years of hands-on experience working with complex laboratory or analytical instruments. Alternatively, an MSc in a relevant field with 2+ years of hands-on experience.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for both hardware and software issues.
  • Experience documenting service activities and producing clear, detailed reports.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and comfortable training others on technical equipment.
  • Organized and able to balance field work, in-house testing, and logistics tasks.
  • Able to work independently in the field and collaboratively with internal teams.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 20 lbs. and work in a range of laboratory environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with service management or ticketing software.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, etc.

Nice to Haves:
  • Experience supporting high-throughput screening, single-cell, microfluidic, or imaging platforms in a life sciences setting.
  • Familiarity with antibody discovery workflows or biotech R&D environments.

Our total rewards package includes an annual base compensation, target bonus, equity, refresh grants, ESPP, comprehensive health plans, immediate 401k matching, PTO, sick leave, paid parental leave, commuter benefits, wellness stipend, education reimbursement and more!
