Patent Agent – High Tech Patent Prosecution (3+ Years)

Direct Counsel is seeking a Patent Agent to join a highly regarded Am Law 100 law firm and its sophisticated Intellectual Property – Patent Prosecution practice. This position is available in Boston, Massachusetts; New York, New York; or San Diego, California.

The ideal candidate will have at least three years of patent prosecution experience and a strong technical background in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field. This is an excellent opportunity to work with innovative companies on cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, software, hardware, wireless technologies, and image and signal processing.

Responsibilities
  • Review invention disclosure documents and participate in invention disclosure meetings with clients and inventors.

  • Conduct prior art searches, analyze patent references, and evaluate patentability.

  • Draft patent applications for complex technologies.

  • Review USPTO office actions, develop response strategies, conduct examiner interviews, and prepare responses.

  • Manage U.S. and foreign patent prosecution dockets.

  • Analyze patents in connection with due diligence and freedom-to-operate analyses.

  • Work closely with attorneys, patent agents, technical advisors, and clients to develop effective patent strategies.

  • Assist clients in protecting and expanding their intellectual property portfolios.

Qualifications
  • USPTO registration is required.

  • 3+ years of patent prosecution experience in one or more of the following technologies:

    • Hardware and devices

    • Software

    • Database technology

    • Artificial intelligence

    • Wireless technology

    • Image and/or signal processing

  • Technical background in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field.

  • Prior law firm experience is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

  • Professional demeanor and ability to effectively communicate with sophisticated clients.

  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Work Environment

Collaboration is an important component of the firm's culture. Professionals are expected to work from the office approximately 60% of the time, in accordance with the firm's current workplace guidelines.

Compensation

Salary Range: $120,000–$220,000 annually, plus bonus eligibility.
