Varsity Baseball Coach

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Athletic Director and High School Principal, the Varsity Baseball Coach is responsible for the planning, organization, supervision, and implementation of the high school baseball program. The coach works with student-athletes to develop fundamental and advanced skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and character while supporting the overall goals and expectations of Buena Vista City Public Schools athletics.

Reports To

Athletic Director, in conjunction with the High School Principal.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to organize, supervise, and lead a secondary-level baseball program.
• Previous coaching experience in baseball or a related sport preferred.
• Knowledge of baseball fundamentals, strategies, rules, and safety practices.
• Ability to effectively lead and supervise assistant coaches and student-athletes.
• Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, officials, and community members.
• Commitment to professional growth and continuous learning.
• Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Develops and implements the philosophy, goals, expectations, and objectives of the baseball program.
• Plans and conducts practices that provide instruction in fundamental and advanced skills, team concepts, conditioning, and game strategy.
• Provides leadership and direction to assistant coaches and other program personnel.
• Supervises student-athletes during practices, games, team activities, and travel.
• Promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, leadership, and positive character development.
• Monitors student-athlete academic progress, eligibility, attendance, and conduct.
• Establishes and communicates team rules, expectations, procedures, and standards.
• Ensures appropriate injury prevention practices, emergency procedures, and required documentation are followed.
• Supervises student managers, statisticians, and other team support personnel as assigned.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Works with the Athletic Director to coordinate schedules, transportation, games, tournaments, and special events.
• Coordinates the preparation and use of athletic facilities and ensures adherence to assigned schedules.
• Ensures required documentation related to student eligibility, physical examinations, parental consent, and participation is completed.
• Oversees the care, maintenance, inventory, and security of athletic equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
• Assists with recommendations regarding equipment needs and program expenditures.
• Provides recommendations and program updates to the Athletic Director and Principal as requested.
• Coordinates with JV and other baseball program coaches, when applicable, to promote consistency and development throughout the program.

Student Supervision and Safety

• Maintains appropriate supervision of student-athletes at all times.
• Ensures students remain in authorized areas during practices, games, and team events.
• Implements established safety procedures, injury response protocols, and emergency procedures.
• Ensures proper use of facilities and equipment.
• Promotes respect for school property, athletic facilities, equipment, teammates, opponents, and officials.

Public Relations and Communication

• Conducts preseason meetings for parents and student-athletes as appropriate.
• Maintains positive and professional relationships with parents, officials, booster organizations, school personnel, and community members.
• Communicates professionally and appropriately when representing BVCPS athletics.
• Coordinates the sharing of schedules, results, program information, and other communications as directed by the Athletic Director.
• Promotes the baseball program and BVCPS athletics in a positive and professional manner.

Terms of Employment

• Seasonal position; stipend paid in accordance with the BVCPS athletic coaching stipend schedule.
• Employment contingent upon School Board approval.
• Employment contingent upon completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check and a Department of Social Services (DSS) Child Protective Services background check, in accordance with Virginia law and BVCPS policy.
• Completion of all required VHSL and division-mandated training.
