Job description

Job Title: Assistant Chief Engineer - Facilities
Job Summary:
We are hiring a hands-on Assistant Chief Engineer to support the daily operation and maintenance of critical building systems in healthcare and laboratory environments. This role is ideal for a skilled professional who thrives in fast-paced settings and can balance fieldwork with administrative responsibilities. You will help ensure optimal performance, reliability, and safety of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems while driving continuous improvement across facility operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Support daily operations and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
Perform preventive maintenance (filters, motors, belts, lighting, bearings, inspections)
Establish processes and programs to support continuous improvement against the objectives
Supervise maintenance staff and coordinate work assignments when applicable
Develop and maintain site-specific maintenance procedures and SOPs
Partner with contractors and vendors to complete maintenance and repair work
Monitor inventory and maintain appropriate stock levels
Respond to emergencies and ensure rapid resolution of facility issues
Ensure compliance with safety standards, codes, and regulatory requirements
Prepare and submit operational reports to leadership
Maintain knowledge of Environment of Care, Joint Commission, and infection control (ICRA) standards
Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED
5+ years of experience maintaining MEP systems in commercial facilities
Experience in hospital, laboratory, or medical office environments (required)
Strong knowledge of HVAC, boilers, pumps, compressors, and building systems
EPA Section 608 Universal Certification (CFC/HFC refrigerants)
Valid driver"s license with a clean driving record
Ability to work independently, including as the sole on-site engineer when needed
Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
Preferences:
Trade school or apprenticeship program completion
Relevant licenses (Journeyman, Master Electrician, Steam Engineer, etc.)
Experience supervising maintenance teams
Knowledge of energy management systems and building automation
Experience in high-pressure, mission-critical environments
