Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Kitchen Helper has the following responsibilities for: cleaning of dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, garbage and recycling, organizing kitchen supplies, kitchen cleaning and sanitation, maintaining an organized and clean work environment, other duties as assigned.

TERMS: Permanent Full-time

HOURS: 37.5/week

DAYS: Wednesday to Sunday

SHIFT TIMINGS:

Wednesday to Friday (7:00AM to 2:30PM)

Saturday and Sunday (12:00PM to 7:30PM)

KEY Accountabilities:

The Kitchen Helper's responsibilities include the following:

  • Maintains cleanliness of work area - garbage, recycling, floors, dishes, cutlery, pot and pans, pest control management
  • Responsible in putting dishes back to their proper storage
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness and order of storage areas, shelving, racks, kitchen equipment, smallware, etc.
  • Cleaning and sanitation to prevent pest activity. Mop and sanitize floors from pest activity and spillage.
  • Cleans all equipment (hood vents, tables, ovens, stove top, flat top, deep fryer, etc)
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner and maintains work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition as per food safety plan
  • Basic food preparation and kitchen helper duties
  • Assisting with receiving and putting away deliveries and donations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Health & Safety:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal precautions
  • Use of rubber mats
  • Use of coats provided to go into freezers
  • Use gloves and aprons provided
  • The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, manipulating foods and moderate amounts of lifting, cutting, chopping, carrying supplies, and walking.
  • The incumbent is required to lift up to 50 lbs.

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to Manager
  • Direct reports: none

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • The incumbent is responsible for maintaining an organized kitchen environment.
  • The incumbent to notify the Food Services Manager of any kitchen supplies to be ordered.
  • The incumbent to report any kitchen equipment issues to the Food Services Manager.

Working Conditions:

The incumbent's work environment is typically in a kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Hot/Steamy environment
  • Noisy
  • Crowded in some cases
  • Pressure with timelines
  • Cuts, Burns, and entering coolers and freezers


The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others (verbal)
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Moving objects
  • Sharp objects
  • Electrical hazards
  • Injury from lifting
  • Falling on wet/slippery floors
  • Cuts, Burns, and entering coolers and freezers

  • The successful job applicant will have completed High School.
  • The successful job applicant will have completed: WHMIS, First Aid, Food Safety, Criminal Record Check

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

Previous work experience as a dishwasher and/or stewarding and/or kitchen helper in a similar work setting an asset.

Skills and Capabilities

  • The job responsibilities for the position requires frequent attention, the ability to follow directions and instructions, and adheres to food safety guidelines.
  • The incumbent may be responsible for providing guidance and direction to other volunteers.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $22.00 to $22.25 with a maximum of $22.50.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
