Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

To prepare and serve nutritious good tasting meals in an efficient and effective manner in accordance with food safety practices.

TERMS:Permanent, Full-Time (37.50 hours/week)

Hours of Work : As per published shift schedules.

DAYS & TIME:Sunday to Monday, (6:00AM - 1:30PM)

Thursday to Saturday, (1:00PM - 8:30PM)

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Clean and organize storerooms and coolers during shift, including putting deliveries and donations away
  • Plan and prepare meals in accordance with published service schedules
  • Completely clean all work areas and equipment both during shift and before leaving
  • Follow written and oral portioning guidelines
  • Provide direction to volunteers helping in the kitchen
  • Ensure surplus food is properly cooled and stored at the end of the meal service and ensure food wastage is reduced
  • Report in writing occurrences or problems with customers or others so that action can be taken and ensure supervisor is aware of customer feedback relating to meals and service
  • Maintain discipline and order in the kitchen and in the dining room area. This is to be done firmly but respectfully and with assistance when needed
  • Record meal amounts and volunteers tickets for the shift worked
  • Complete shift duties from posted shift lists and verbal instructions
  • Ensure that catering needs are met according to the posted lists and any verbal instructions
  • Fill out food safety forms required for the shift worked
  • Follow policy and procedures as outlined in manual and for each shift
  • Report all faulty kitchen equipment as quickly as possible
  • Provide sufficient preparation for the next days meal service, including pulling any needed items from the freezer
  • In the absence of a dishwasher and/or volunteer assistance:
    • Maintains cleanliness of work area - garbage, floors, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans.
    • Responsible in putting dishes back to their proper shelves.
    • Maintain cleanliness of the plate rack, cup rack, equipment shelving, dishwasher, sinks and all the speed racks.
    • Cleans all stainless steel after usage and mops floor when necessary. o Polish and maintain silverware and other metal kitchen equipment.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner and maintains work are in a clean, orderly, and safe condition as per food safety plan.
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness at all times within the kitchen and storage area.
  • To demonstrate compassion in the administration of policies and procedures and to support, where and when possible, the efforts of all residents and co-workers. Interactions with all peoples must be respectful, honest, and caring. Assertiveness is not to be construed as aggressiveness and mannerisms must reflect desired behavior. Employees are expected to take appropriate corrective action and report conditions which may negatively impact the facility's fundamental values or physical assets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

HEALTH & SAFETY:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal precautions
  • Use of rubber mats
  • Use coats provided to go into freezers
  • Use gloves provided

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The incumbent's work environment is typically in a kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility.
  • The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions: o Dealing with angry people o Verbal abuse o Hot/Steamy environment o Noisy o Crowded in some cases o Pressure with timelines o Cuts, burns and entering freezers
  • The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to sever injury or illness due to: o Physical attacks by others (verbal) o Exposure to toxic chemicals o Moving objects o Sharp objects o Electrical hazards o Injury from lifting
  • Falling on wet/slippery floors
  • Cuts, burns and entering freezers

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Adequate training in a restaurant type environment
  • Recognized cooking course certificate
  • Foodsafe Level 1
  • First Aid Level 1

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Prior related experience, including institutional kitchen experience or equivalent an asset.
  • Inventory management of supplies
  • Working in a team environment in a position of responsibility with minimum supervision
  • Ability to teach and supervise others in a non-threatening positive manner
  • Ability to accept coaching, education, and instruction of cooking techniques and constructive criticism
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to communicate well verbally with residents, customers, staff, and including interdepartmental staff
  • Ability to serve people without judgement

Skills and Capabilities

  • The performance of the job requires frequent amount of standing manipulating foods and moderate amounts of lifting, cutting, chopping, carrying supplies and walking.
  • The incumbent is required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • The performance of the job requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and occasionally ordering supplies.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $23.43 to $23.68 with a maximum of $23.93.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
