What is a help desk engineer?

Help Desk Engineers are IT professionals who provide technical support and troubleshooting services to end users experiencing issues with computer systems, software, or hardware. They serve as the first point of contact for clients or employees seeking assistance with IT problems, responding to inquiries via phone, email, or chat. Help Desk Engineers diagnose issues, guide users through solutions, escalate complex problems to higher-level technicians, and help maintain the smooth operation of an organization’s technology infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a help desk engineer?

To thrive as a Help Desk Engineer, you need a solid understanding of computer systems, troubleshooting techniques, and customer support principles, often supported by a degree in IT or relevant certifications like CompTIA A+. Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote desktop tools, and knowledge bases is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving abilities help build rapport with users and efficiently resolve issues. These skills and qualities are essential to provide timely technical support, ensure user satisfaction, and maintain smooth IT operations.

What are some common challenges help desk engineers face when supporting remote users, and how can they effectively address them?

Help Desk Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting connectivity issues, guiding users through technical steps without direct access to their devices, and managing a high volume of requests from remote employees. To address these, engineers rely on clear communication, remote desktop tools, and detailed documentation to resolve issues efficiently. Building patience and adaptability is key, as is staying updated on the latest support technologies to ensure users receive prompt and effective assistance, regardless of their location.

What will your typical day look like?

Pre-sales and pursuit leadership (all tracks):

•    Lead pre-sales solutioning for opportunities in your domain, partnering with account teams to qualify, shape, and win pursuits
•    Support pricing and scoping work, produce proposals and RFP responses, and present solution narratives that connect business problems to technical architecture
•    Own the hand-off into delivery—remain accountable post-sale, oversee mobilization, and ensure delivery teams have the context and guardrails to succeed
•    Consolidate and manage the deal desk/pipeline, capturing opportunity details, resourcing needs, status, value, and timelines; drive weekly pipeline calls focused on progress, risks, and next steps
•    Apply clear labels and governance across pursuits (RFP/pursuit classification, resource counts, owners) and maintain accurate notes that support resourcing and forecasts
•    Collaborate across disciplines (architecture, delivery management, staffing/availability) to align demand and supply and scale through delivery managers

Depending on your technical domain, you will also:

  • Custom development: Architect cloud-native applications across the full technology stack (Java, .NET, Python, Node.js), shaping modernization and product engineering solutions from pursuit through production
  • Integration/middleware: Shape integration strategies and architect middleware solutions (e.g., MuleSoft, Software AG, IBM), leading API, event-driven, and enterprise connectivity engagements
  • Curam: Lead solutioning and delivery of Merative Curam social program management engagements, guiding public sector clients through implementation, customization, and modernization of health and human services platforms
  • DevOps/platform engineering: Architect enterprise automation strategies—infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Bicep), CI/CD, container platforms (Kubernetes, AKS), and GitOps—and lead the delivery teams that implement them
  • AI-enabled delivery: Shape AI-accelerated engineering propositions—LLM/SLM integration, RAG architectures, vector databases, agentic workflows, and AI development tooling (Cursor, Claude Code, Devin)—and embed AI-assisted delivery models into how we sell and execute engagements
  • Azure cloud engineering: Architect solutions across the Azure ecosystem (App Service, Functions, AKS, Container Apps, Service Bus, API Management, Cosmos DB, Entra ID), leading cloud-native and migration engagements from business case through delivery
About the team

We're growing our Product Engineering & Development team and seeking an experienced Manager who can bridge pre-sales and delivery. You'll help shape solution strategy with clients, contribute to scoping and pricing, and stay closely connected through delivery so that what we sell is implemented successfully. Depending on your background, you'll support pursuits and delivery in one or more technical domains: custom development, integration/middleware, Curam (social program management), DevOps/platform engineering, AI-enabled delivery, or Azure cloud engineering. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technology practitioner with strong pre-sales experience who can translate customer needs into implementable architectures and manage teams toward high-quality outcomes.

Enough about us, let’s talk about you

Must-have qualifications
•    Demonstrated technology pre-sales experience with the architectural depth to bridge customer needs and delivery teams, in ONE OR MORE of the following areas:
o    Custom software development (full-stack, cloud-native application engineering, modern software architecture, and application modernization)
o    Integration/middleware (MuleSoft, Software AG, IBM, or similar enterprise integration platforms)
o    Curam social program management solutions
o    DevOps/platform engineering (infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, Kubernetes, cloud automation)
o    AI-enabled delivery and software engineering (GenAI, LLMs, RAG, agentic systems, AI-assisted development, GitHub Copilot, AI-powered SDLC acceleration)
o    Azure cloud engineering (Azure PaaS, container services, cloud-native architectures)
•    Proven experience leading custom application development and modernization engagements, including solution shaping, architecture oversight, estimation, delivery planning, and risk management.
•    Demonstrated knowledge of AI-enabled delivery methodologies, leveraging generative AI, intelligent automation, and AI-powered development tools to accelerate development, testing, migration, documentation, and operational processes while maintaining quality and governance.
•    Proven ability to scope, estimate, and price complex technology engagements spanning application development, cloud transformation, integration, and AI-enabled solutions.
•    Track record of owning delivery outcomes for solutions you've helped sell; comfortable operating across pre-sales, solution architecture, client relationship management, and delivery leadership.
•    Excellent executive communication, client-facing storytelling, stakeholder management, and workshop facilitation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate business value, technical strategy, and delivery approaches to both business and technical audiences
Nice to have:
•    Experience across multiple technical domains listed above
•    Experience scaling delivery through delivery teams; strong pipeline governance habits
•    Familiarity with CRM tools; emphasis is on pre-sales, pricing, and delivery integration
•    Certifications relevant to your domain (Azure, AWS, MuleSoft, Kubernetes, Curam, etc.)
