TEACHER ASSISTANT (FOR CHILDREN OF AGE 2-5 y.o.) 


The opportunity

Kings Bay Y/ JCC Brooklyn is a community space that connects, uplifts, and inspires. It is a Jewish Community Center with and without walls.  Our 4 locations, Nostrand Avenue, Windsor Terrace, North Williamsburg and Clinton Hill are progressive schools based on several wonderful philosophies including the Play-Based Emergent Curriculum. Students are engaged in activities that are both relevant and of great interest to them, including: art, literacy, dance and music. They will use their five senses to explore the world around them and be exposed to a variety of different learning materials.

We are seeking a dedicated Part-Time Assistant Teacher to join our team on a consistent schedule. The Assistant Teacher will support classroom activities, supervise students, and step in to lead when the lead teacher is unavailable. This role provides essential support to ensure smooth classroom operations, whether during transitions, long-term teacher absences, or in day-to-day classroom needs. The position offers a regular schedule, making it ideal for someone looking for a consistent and rewarding opportunity to contribute to a dynamic learning environment at Kings Bay Y/JCC Brooklyn.


Main Responsibilities

  • Follow lesson plans provided by the Regular Teacher 

  • Be able to lift, carry and hold children, to stop and bend to a child’s level and stand for long periods of time throughout the day

  • Encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment while Regular Teacher is absent

  • Track attendance, collect homework and provide general supervision during class periods

  • Work with students individually or as a group/adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student and to keep up with the regular curriculum

  • Manage and instruct the class effectively from roll call to tidying up the classroom after the students have left

  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground

  • For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the Regular Teacher’s past lesson plans

  • Communicate daily and meet weekly in the classroom with your head teacher. Accept guidance where needed and assist the head teacher in supervising and assessing student teachers assigned to the classroom 

Qualifications 

  • Early Childhood Education (at least 2 years) 

  • Experience in leading and instructing childcare students – at least 1 year

  • General knowledge of several subjects 

  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to adapt plans to specific classrooms

  • Flexibility and critical-thinking skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
