What is the difference between Heavy Haul Rgn Driver vs Flatbed Truck Driver?

AspectHeavy Haul Rgn DriverFlatbed Truck Driver
CredentialsCommercial Driver's License (CDL), specialized endorsements for oversized loadsCDL, possibly additional endorsements for specific cargo
Work EnvironmentTransporting oversized, heavy, or abnormal loads across regionsHauling large, flat items like machinery or building materials
Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, heavy equipment transportConstruction, logistics, general freight

Heavy Haul Rgn Drivers specialize in transporting oversized and heavy loads requiring specialized equipment and permits, often over long distances. Flatbed Truck Drivers haul large, flat cargo like machinery or building materials. While both roles require a CDL and similar certifications, Heavy Haul Rgn Drivers handle more complex, oversized loads, making their work more specialized within the trucking industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Heavy Haul RGN Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Heavy Haul RGN (Removable Gooseneck) Driver, you need a valid CDL (often Class A), extensive experience in operating and maneuvering oversized loads, and thorough knowledge of DOT regulations. Familiarity with specialized equipment such as RGN trailers, load securement systems, and GPS routing tools is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help drivers navigate route challenges and coordinate with clients and escorts. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, legal, and timely transport of heavy or oversized cargo.

What are some common challenges Heavy Haul RGN Drivers face when transporting oversized loads, and how can they prepare for them?

Heavy Haul RGN Drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating complex routes, securing permits for oversized loads, and ensuring cargo safety. Preparing involves thorough route planning to avoid low bridges or weight-restricted roads, understanding state and federal regulations, and conducting regular equipment inspections. Collaborating closely with dispatchers, pilot vehicles, and law enforcement is also crucial to coordinate safe and timely deliveries. Staying updated on industry best practices and safety protocols helps drivers manage these challenges effectively.

What are Heavy Haul RGN Drivers?

Heavy Haul RGN (Removable Gooseneck) Drivers are professional truck drivers who specialize in transporting oversized or overweight loads using RGN trailers. These trailers are designed to carry heavy machinery, large construction equipment, and other loads that cannot be transported by standard trailers due to their size or weight. Heavy Haul RGN Drivers are responsible for safely loading, securing, transporting, and unloading these specialized loads, often requiring special permits and route planning. They must have a strong understanding of regulations, safety procedures, and the mechanical aspects of their equipment. This role often demands advanced driving skills and experience with unique challenges on the road.

We are seeking a Heavy Haul Truck Driver to join our specialized logistics team with experience transporting heavy equipment, oversized loads, and out-of-gauge freight using RGN (Removable Gooseneck) and lowboy trailers. This role primarily involves daily port drayage, with occasional over-the-road assignments that may require overnight travel. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hauling over-dimensional and out-of-gauge loads and be comfortable navigating complex permits, routes, and load securement requirements. This person will be driving to and from the VA Ports (VIG, NIT) and rail lines, and will have an active CDL- A license and TWIC card. • Safely operate a tractor-trailer vehicle to transport goods to and from Virginia Ports and rail lines (most trips are local to the Portsmouth VA area, with occasional OTR required).  Comply with all Virginia Port Authority rules and regulations.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and report any issues or malfunctions to the Terminal Manager.
  • Plan and execute routes based on size and weight restrictions, bridge laws, and permit requirements.
  • Secure loads by properly using chains, binders, tarps, and other equipment in accordance with company policies and legal standards.
  • Communicate effectively with the Terminal Manager, customers, and other team members to coordinate pick-up and delivery schedules and address any issues that arise.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, and hours of service.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly vehicle, both inside and out, and report any maintenance or repair needs promptly.

Position Requirements:

· High school diploma or GED

· Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a clean driving record, TWIC card and DOT medical card

· Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.

· Heavy hauling and over-dimensional/out-of-gauge experience is required

· Smart phone or computer experience is required

· Must be able to physically stand, sit, move, squat, walk, and climb during the course of the shift

· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds or more above your head

· Occasional night and weekend work will be needed

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills

· Understand DOT safety requirements and, if HAZMAT certified, hazard material handling and transport requirements
