What is the difference between Hearing Evaluation vs Audiologist?

AspectHearing EvaluationAudiologist
CredentialsTypically performed by hearing aid specialists or techniciansRequires a master's or doctoral degree in audiology and state licensure
Work EnvironmentClinics, hearing aid centers, or retail storesHospitals, clinics, private practices, educational settings
Job ResponsibilitiesConduct hearing tests, assist with hearing aid selectionComprehensive hearing assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning, counseling

Hearing evaluations are often performed by hearing aid specialists or technicians focusing on basic hearing tests. Audiologists have advanced training, allowing them to diagnose and treat a wider range of hearing and balance disorders. While both roles involve hearing assessments, audiologists provide comprehensive care beyond initial evaluations.

How to become a hearing evaluation specialist?

To become a hearing evaluation specialist, one typically needs a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by postsecondary education such as an associate's or bachelor's degree in audiology, speech-language pathology, or a related field. Certification or licensure, such as passing a state exam or obtaining certification from organizations like the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), is often required to perform hearing assessments professionally.
