What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Healthcare Automation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Healthcare Automation, you need a strong background in healthcare processes, information technology, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in health informatics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with automation platforms like RPA (Robotic Process Automation), EHR systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help professionals bridge clinical needs and technical solutions. These skills are crucial for implementing effective automation that improves patient care, increases efficiency, and ensures regulatory compliance in healthcare settings.

How does a professional in Healthcare Automation typically collaborate with clinical and IT teams?

Healthcare Automation professionals play a key role in bridging the gap between clinical staff and IT departments. They work closely with clinicians to understand workflow challenges and requirements, then partner with IT specialists to design, implement, and maintain automation solutions such as electronic health record (EHR) integrations, automated scheduling, or data reporting tools. Regular communication and cross-functional meetings are common to ensure solutions meet both patient care and technical standards. Successful collaboration often involves translating clinical needs into technical specifications and providing ongoing training or support as new automation tools are adopted.

What is healthcare automation?

Healthcare automation refers to the use of technology, such as software, robotics, and artificial intelligence, to streamline and improve healthcare processes. This can include automating administrative tasks like patient scheduling and billing, as well as clinical processes such as lab result analysis and medication dispensing. The goal is to increase efficiency, reduce human errors, and allow healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care. Automation can also help healthcare organizations save costs and improve patient outcomes.

Job description

Canvas Medical is accelerating everyday medicine with an EMR platform built for healthcare automation. We create modern, elegant front- and back-end tooling to enable new ways for developers and clinicians to integrate data, automate workflows, and collaborate to solve healthcare's toughest challenges. In doing so we advance our mission to give care teams superpowers with software.

Canvas is institutionally backed by some of the greatest technology investors in the world (funded notable health tech companies such as GoodRx, Oscar Health, and Hims & Hers Health).

Role Description
We're hiring a Solutions Consultant to join our GTM Operations team and bridge the gap between customer needs and platform capabilities. This role sits at the intersection of customer empathy, product strategy, and technical executionโ€”helping providers and care teams unlock real value from Canvas Medical's EMR by transforming their workflows into actionable, high-quality solutions.

As a Solutions Consultant, you'll engage directly with customers, prospects, and internal stakeholders to understand complex healthcare delivery challenges. You'll translate these insights into clear product requirements, prototype solutions using the Canvas SDK, and help evolve our platform by identifying strategic enhancement opportunities. This is a high-leverage role where you'll act as a multiplierโ€”accelerating how Canvas delivers value to customers while shaping how our platform scales.

The ideal candidate brings deep curiosity about healthcare technology, comfort with modern development tools, and exceptional ability to bridge business and technical contexts. You'll thrive in ambiguity, balance short-term customer needs with long-term platform health, and collaborate seamlessly across operational and technical teams. We're looking for someone with a growth mindset who can rapidly iterate, experiment with new approaches, and build from the ground up with agility.
Responsibilities
  • Customer Discovery & Solution Design
  • Engage directly with customers, prospects, and internal partners to understand clinical workflows, pain points, and desired outcomes
  • Translate healthcare delivery insights into clear, structured Product Requirements Documents (PRDs) that drive solution design
  • Balance immediate customer needs with long-term platform evolution to create sustainable, scalable solutions
  • Document learnings and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing to elevate team effectiveness
  • Technical Prototyping & Platform Development
  • Build and validate solutions using the Canvas SDK, demonstrating fluency in event-driven design, handlers, and effects
  • Partner with engineers to prototype elegant solutions that showcase platform capabilities
  • Strategically evaluate when to deliver within existing SDK capabilities versus advocating for platform enhancements
  • Create and maintain reusable solution patterns and playbooks that accelerate future engagements
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Delivery
  • Collaborate across sales, customer success, implementation, engineering, and product teams to align on delivery and feedback loops
  • Bridge operational and technical contexts to move solutions forward effectively
  • Surface and track quality signals (demo-to-production flow, SDK adoption, customer feedback) to inform iteration
  • Shadow senior team members while progressively owning lower-complexity engagements independently
Qualifications
  • Required Experience & Background
  • Recent graduate or early-career candidate in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Engineering, UX, Applied Data, or related discipline
  • Deep interest in healthcare technology and EMR systems with desire to improve provider and patient workflows
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt in ambiguous environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to distill complex contexts into crisp requirements
  • Technical Skills & Capabilities
  • Comfort learning and working with modern SDKs, APIs, and plugin-based architectures
  • Willingness to ramp into concepts like event-driven design, handlers, and effects
  • Strategic mindset to balance short-term deliverables with long-term platform health
  • Ability to identify leverage points and scalable solution patterns
  • Healthcare & Domain Expertise
  • Understanding of healthcare delivery challenges and provider workflow pain points
  • Interest in healthcare automation and improving clinical operations through software
  • Ability to engage with clinical, operational, and financial stakeholders
  • Personal Attributes
  • Collaborative by defaultโ€”thrives working across operations and technical teams
  • Growth mindset with rapid learning velocity
  • Productive tension managementโ€”comfortable wrestling with trade-offs
  • AI-native and pragmaticโ€”uses modern tooling to accelerate discovery while respecting real-world constraints
  • Nice-to-Have Qualifications
  • Exposure to building or working with SDKs, frontend/backend integrations, or plugin architectures
  • Familiarity with healthcare data workflows, standards, or provider-facing tooling
  • Experience drafting product requirements, specs, or mockups for technical systems
  • Comfort with basic scripting (Python, JavaScript) or building demonstrable prototypes
  • Prior customer-facing experience in technical capacity (internships, support, technical project work)
What Success Looks Like at 90 Days
  • Own parts of the solution lifecycleโ€”writing PRDs and delivering SDK-based prototypes independently
  • Successfully translate 3-5 customer engagements into actionable solutions using the Canvas platform
  • Identify and document at least 2 platform enhancement opportunities that enable scalable solutions
  • Build strong working relationships across GTM operations and engineering teams
Growth Path
  • In your first 6-12 months, you'll begin owning significant portions of the solution lifecycleโ€”from customer discovery through prototype delivery. High performers evolve into senior solution consultants who lead small pods, shape customer delivery strategies, and drive platform capability expansion.
  • This role offers a unique opportunity to influence both how Canvas delivers immediate customer value and how our platform scales to meet future healthcare automation challenges.
Location
  • Remote/San Francisco/Washington DCย We are a fully remote, distributed team but encourage in-person collaboration in our office in San Francisco, or one of our satellite locations which for this role is in Washington DC. We encourage people to do their work when and where they perform at their best. Because of this structure, strong written communication skills, time management skills, and personal accountability are very important to us.
