Why does the job exist?
The Supervisor, Attorney will:
  • Be responsible for supervising the work of at least two (2) full time attorneys in the assigned jurisdiction(s);
  • Recruit, retain, train, advise & mentor the attorney staff in their assigned field offices;
  • Provide legal advice to and advocate for the Health Care Authority (HCA), Child Support Services Division (CSSD);
  • Be responsible for handling the most complex legal work, and may represent the HCA, CSSD in administrative, district and appellate court hearings;
  • Serve as an expert legal advisor for the HCA, CSSD.

How does it get done?
The Supervisor, Attorney is responsible for:
  • Devoting a substantial portion of time assigning to and directly supervising work of at least two (2) permanent/full-time employees;
  • Acting upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations, interview and recommend selection of applicants, and recommends disciplinary actions;
  • Conducting training of attorney and non-attorney staff, provides mentorship to and advises non-supervisory attorneys within their assigned jurisdiction(s);
  • Ensuring court dockets and hearings are adequately handled;
  • Meeting regularly with CSSD Regional Managing Attorneys and the CSSD Deputy General Counsel of Legal Services regarding contested cases, complaints, disciplinary actions, representation at Fair Hearings, and other issues as determined to be necessary;
  • Handling the most complex legal work, and represents CSSD in administrative, district and appellate court hearings.

Who are the customers?
  • The Client is the New Mexico HCA, CSSD while unbiased services are provided to the customers of the HCA, CSSD.

Ideal Candidate
The Ideal Candidate has experience:
  • Ten (10) years or more experience as a licensed attorney;
  • A license or eligible to be licensed in New Mexico;
  • Experience in public sector law, family law and/or Federal or State Child Support programs, including handling pro se parties;
  • Excellent legal writing and verbal skills;
  • Experience working with child support matters including expertise in federal/state Child Support programs and providing training for staff and attorneys.

Minimum Qualification
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and five (5) years of experience in the practice of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license.
Employment Requirements
All Attorney classifications must be and remain licensed as an attorney, in good standing, by the Supreme Court of New Mexico, or licensed as an attorney and in good standing by the highest court of another state and eligible pursuant to the limited license provisions (See Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA).
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Employment is subject to a pre-employment criminal history background investigation and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting: late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Travel is required. Possible exposure to irate clientele. Incumbent will work under stress and frequent time constraints.
