What is a health safety engineer?

Health Safety Engineers are professionals who design systems and procedures to prevent people from getting sick or injured and to keep property from being damaged. They work to identify potential hazards in the workplace and develop solutions to minimize risks. Their work often involves inspecting facilities, reviewing safety procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations, and educating staff about safety practices. Health Safety Engineers can be found in industries like manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and government agencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a health safety engineer?

To thrive as a Health Safety Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, occupational health and safety regulations, and risk assessment, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety management systems, incident investigation software, and certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for identifying hazards and collaborating with diverse teams. These skills and qualifications are essential to effectively minimize workplace risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and protect employee well-being.

What are some common challenges health safety engineers face when implementing safety protocols on-site?

Health Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from employees, ensuring consistent compliance across different teams, and adapting protocols to fit unique operational environments. They must communicate clearly with both management and staff to foster a safety-first culture and address any misconceptions about new procedures. Balancing regulatory requirements with practical, site-specific solutions is key, and successful engineers collaborate closely with various departments to identify potential hazards and develop effective, actionable safety measures.

Job description

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY ENGINEER

As part of the SpaceX EHS Team, you will provide timely, clear, and high-quality technical expertise and assist in the implementation of all environmental, health, and safety programs for the construction, expansion, and operation of SpaceX's advanced AI infrastructure and large-scale compute facilities. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in both environmental and occupational safety, hands-on, and thrives in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. We work as a tightly integrated team, and responsibilities will include supporting other programs to ensure the overall success of SpaceX's mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations and/or guidelines established by OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with department leadership, engineering teams, and facility managers to complete job hazard assessments and implement robust health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor employee exposure to physical and chemical hazards and develop recommendations for remedial actions when safety standards are not met.
  • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by the EPA, CERCLA, RCRA, DOT, and other environmental and transportation agencies.
  • Work closely with AI hardware engineers, construction teams, and operations technicians to perform detailed safety reviews of complex operations involving high-power systems, cooling infrastructure, and hazardous materials to ensure safe execution.
  • Lead or assist in all aspects of incident investigations, including initial response, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and closure.
  • Implement and develop safety and health programs, including but not limited to:
    • OSHA general industry and construction standards
    • HAZCOM, hazmat handling, cryogenics, high-pressure and high-voltage systems
    • Confined space, fall protection, lock-out/tag-out, and electrical safety
  • Develop practical safety solutions to resolve EHS hazards/concerns within cost and schedule constraints, following the safety hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE) to keep risks to personnel, property, and the environment within acceptable boundaries.
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure full regulatory compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans (fires, chemical spills, power events, etc.).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety, environmental science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design, development, and operational oversight of environmental, health, and safety programs, ideally in high-tech manufacturing, data centers, or industrial construction environments.

PREFFERED SKILLS AND EXPEREINCE:

  • Master's and/or Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, or aerospace) with emphasis on occupational health and safety.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification.
  • Knowledge of process safety management, high-power electrical systems, liquid cooling infrastructure, and chemical delivery systems common in large-scale compute facilities.
  • Strong knowledge and experience interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This is an on-site position and will require relocation to the Memphis, TN area (or designated SpaceX facility) if not already local.
  •  Position may occasionally require extended hours, weekends, or on-call support during critical construction or operational phases.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any necessary security clearances or background checks required for access to SpaceX facilities.
