Machine Safety Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Safety Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, risk assessment, and safety standards such as ISO 13849 or IEC 62061, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety analysis tools, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and certifications like TÜV Functional Safety Engineer is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring compliance. These skills and qualifications are essential for designing safe machinery, preventing workplace accidents, and meeting regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Machine Safety Engineers when implementing new safety protocols in manufacturing environments?

Machine Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from operators, integrating safety solutions with legacy machinery, and ensuring compliance with ever-evolving safety regulations. Balancing productivity goals with rigorous safety standards can require creative problem-solving and strong communication skills. Collaborating with production teams, maintenance staff, and management is key to successfully implementing new protocols, as it helps ensure buy-in and proper training across all levels.

What are Machine Safety Engineers?

Machine Safety Engineers are professionals who specialize in ensuring that machinery and industrial equipment operate safely and comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. They assess risks, design and implement safety systems, and conduct inspections and audits to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. Their work often involves collaborating with design, maintenance, and operations teams to identify potential hazards and develop solutions that minimize risk while maintaining productivity.

What is the difference between Machine Safety Engineer vs Safety Technician?

AspectMachine Safety EngineerSafety Technician
CertificationsOSHA 30/ OSHA 500, CSP, or equivalentOSHA 10/ OSHA 30, safety-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning safety protocols, risk assessments, and compliance in manufacturing or industrial settingsImplementing safety procedures, inspections, and incident investigations on-site
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, industrial plants, engineering firmsFactories, construction sites, industrial facilities

While both roles focus on workplace safety, Machine Safety Engineers primarily design safety systems and ensure compliance during the development phase, whereas Safety Technicians implement safety measures and conduct inspections on the ground. Both roles are essential for maintaining a safe work environment in industrial settings.

Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE:

As part of the xAI EHS Team, you will provide timely, clear, and high-quality technical expertise and assist in the implementation of all environmental, health, and safety programs for the construction, expansion, and operation of xAI's advanced AI infrastructure and large-scale compute facilities. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in both environmental and occupational safety, hands-on, and thrives in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. We work as a tightly integrated team, and responsibilities will include supporting other programs to ensure the overall success of xAI's mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations and/or guidelines established by OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with department leadership, engineering teams, and facility managers to complete job hazard assessments and implement robust health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor employee exposure to physical and chemical hazards and develop recommendations for remedial actions when safety standards are not met.
  • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by the EPA, CERCLA, RCRA, DOT, and other environmental and transportation agencies.
  • Work closely with AI hardware engineers, construction teams, and operations technicians to perform detailed safety reviews of complex operations involving high-power systems, cooling infrastructure, and hazardous materials to ensure safe execution.
  • Lead or assist in all aspects of incident investigations, including initial response, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and closure.
  • Implement and develop safety and health programs, including but not limited to:
    • OSHA general industry and construction standards
    • HAZCOM, hazmat handling, cryogenics, high-pressure and high-voltage systems
    • Confined space, fall protection, lock-out/tag-out, and electrical safety
  • Develop practical safety solutions to resolve EHS hazards/concerns within cost and schedule constraints, following the safety hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE) to keep risks to personnel, property, and the environment within acceptable boundaries.
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure full regulatory compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans (fires, chemical spills, power events, etc.).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety, environmental science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in the design, development, and operational oversight of environmental, health, and safety programs, ideally in high-tech manufacturing, data centers, or industrial construction environments.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's and/or Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, or aerospace) with emphasis on occupational health and safety.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification.
  • Knowledge of process safety management, high-power electrical systems, liquid cooling infrastructure, and chemical delivery systems common in large-scale compute facilities.
  • Strong knowledge and experience interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • This is an on-site position and will require relocation to the Memphis, TN area (or designated xAI facility) if not already local.
  •  Position may occasionally require extended hours, weekends, or on-call support during critical construction or operational phases.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any necessary security clearances or background checks required for access to xAI facilities.
