What is health journalism?

A Health Journalism job involves reporting on medical news, public health issues, and scientific advancements in healthcare. Health journalists research, interview experts, and write articles or produce multimedia content to inform the public. They work for newspapers, magazines, websites, or broadcast media, translating complex medical information into accessible language. Strong research skills and an understanding of medical and scientific concepts are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in health journalism?

To thrive in Health Journalism, you need strong reporting, writing, and research skills, often supported by a journalism, communications, or public health degree. Familiarity with data analysis software, content management systems, and multimedia storytelling tools is highly beneficial. Curiosity, ethical integrity, and the ability to translate complex medical information into clear, engaging content are valuable soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate, accessible health reporting that informs the public and upholds industry credibility.

What are some common challenges faced by health journalists in their daily work?

Health journalists often need to balance accuracy and clarity while translating complex scientific research into content that is accessible to a general audience. They must also navigate tight deadlines, verify information from multiple sources, and stay current with rapidly evolving medical developments. Collaboration with editors, medical experts, and sometimes graphic or digital teams is typical to produce well-rounded stories. These challenges require strong attention to detail and adaptability, but they also offer opportunities to shape impactful public health narratives.

Key Objectives / Deliverables
  • STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP AND NARRATIVE ARCHITECTURE: Own the overarching data narrative across Lilly’s R&D pipeline, ensuring each data readout, congress disclosure, and publication reinforces the enterprise science story and maintains a consistent playbook.

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, science, public relations, or related field.
  • 12+ years of communications experience with significant depth in pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare environments.
  • Authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis (no visa sponsorship).
Additional Skills / Preferences
  • Experience leading large, matrixed communications teams across multiple therapeutic areas or business functions.
  • Track record of strategic counsel to C‑suite or senior executive audiences.
  • Experience developing and executing communications strategies around clinical data, regulatory milestones, and scientific congresses; robust scientific expertise required.
  • Deep understanding of the drug development lifecycle and the communications implications at each stage.
  • Ability to synthesize cross‑TA narratives into enterprise‑level stories.
  • Exceptional media relations skills with experience engaging top‑tier business, science, and health journalists.
  • Proven record of building and scaling high‑performing teams, including recruiting for niche roles that combine science and communications.
  • Strong judgment in high‑pressure, ambiguous situations with incomplete information.
  • Proactive, anticipatory mindset that shapes narratives before competitors.
  • Experience with congress strategy, publications planning, and investor communications.
  • Ability to operate at the intersection of science, business, and reputation across audiences.
