Job description

Position Purpose
The Medical Assistant is accountable for assisting the providers in front and back office procedures. The incumbent has the added responsibility of providing a direct liaison between provider and patient, making certain that any patient questions or concerns have been addressed by the appropriate provider. This position may float to various sites within the health system.
Medical Assistants working in a Medical Home medical practice setting will be an integral part of the patient's care team. They will work side-by-side with other members of the patient's care team, including healthcare providers and nurses. Medical Assistants in these settings will be required to do more during the rooming process; from reviewing medications, to goal setting, to patient education. They will also be expected to assist with the tracking and coordination of patient test results, with reminding patients of overdue health maintenance topics, and with assisting other members of the Medical Home Care Team in delivering optimal patient-centered care.
Nature and Scope
The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the provider in back office duties, including but not limited to: escorting the patient from the waiting room to the examination room promptly; taking vital signs as per guidelines; maintaining examination rooms' stock; documenting all patient communications; preparing lab specimens for processing; completing the necessary referral forms and obtaining authorizations for referrals and keeping records of same; scheduling patients for tests; placing and receiving phone calls in order of importance and filing into patient charts to become part of the permanent record; and administering treatments and medications per provider order in accordance with established policies.
Challenges to this position are delivery of patient care complicated by new techniques, paperwork, changing department and hospital policies, increased information available on each patient and fluctuations in staffing.
The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensor, psychosocial and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served and meet the standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age specific competency standard.
The incumbent uses professionalism and diplomacy with interacting with patients of all ages, their families, physicians, physician office staff and other health care providers in the accurate collecting of demographic, clinical and financial information in person or via telephone interviews.
This position will keep abreast of all standards to assure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory agencies including third party reimbursement requirements.

The position requires a fundamental knowledge of technical work with orthopedic bracing and casting related activities. Responsible for application, medication, repair and fitting with a wide variety of casts, splints, and braces to all areas of the body.
• Apply appropriate casts/splints per physician or practitioner direction using appropriate casting/splinting materials with the body in the appropriate position.
• Fit casts, splints and braces to ensure maximum comfort and avoid unnecessary pressures
• Trim, split, remove casts as required
• Adjust braces to physician specification
• Perform documentation and patient education related to cast, splints or braces
• Provide cast care and brace instructions
• Fit and instruct on Crutches and other mobilization aids
• Prepare, stock and clean exam rooms per MA requirements
• Stock exam rooms, Inventory specialty items and initiate reorder of supplies as needed
• Maintain tools and equipment
• Setup fluoroscopy machine for care provider use
• Contact vendors about brace orders
• Coordinate with patients to assist in completing workups
• Complete forms prior to physician review
Assistance in Operating Room, Inpatient units and Emergency room
• Assist physician with application of splints, casts and braces as needed
• Modify or split casts as needed
• Instruct patients on cast care, brace/splint application and care
This position does provide patient care.

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English.
Experience:
Multi-physician office practice experience highly preferred. CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, NRCMA, EMT 1 or completion of an Externship (with leadership approval) preferred.
License(s):
Current State of Nevada license for Office Laboratory Assistant or Certified Laboratory Assistant or an application must be submitted within 90 days of employment (excludes departments: 200279, 200280, 200282, 200305, 200317, 200386, 200399, 200410, 200415, 515316, 515317, 530279, 530285, 530288, 530308, 530317, 530367, 530396, 530399). Failure to apply for and/or receive license within 90 days will result in discharge.
Certification(s):
Current AHA BLS or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment required.
Some positions may require DOT and Non-DOT drug testing certifications. Employee will have 90 days from date of hire to obtain and maintain certification.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) - issued by National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) - issued by American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - issued by American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
National Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - issued by National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) - issued by National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - issued by American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Allied Health Association (AAH)
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)
State of Nevada EMT certification - (basic, advanced, paramedic)
Computer / Typing:
Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
