Summary
The role of the Health & Safety Specialist is fundamental in creating a secure and healthy workplace. With a primary focus on day-to-day implementation and continuous improvement, this position ensures that safety programs are effectively carried out throughout the Site. By conducting regular audits and assessments, the Health & Safety Specialist identifies potential risks and develops action plans in conjunction with cross-functional teams to address them. Their close collaboration with operations leaders helps maintain compliance with safety protocols and regulations. Taking an active approach, this role involves spending variable time on the production floor engaging with Team Members, and addressing safety concerns firsthand. The Health & Safety Specialist plays a vital role in fostering a culture of safety, mitigating risks, and prioritizing the well-being of all team members.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety laws and regulations, guiding leaders to improve safety behaviors and prevent injuries.
  • Perform safety evaluations, and audits, and facilitate Joint health and safety committees.
  • Investigate incidents, conduct root-cause analysis, and provide recommendations for corrective and preventive measures.
  • Collaborate with agency partners to manage the return-to-work program.
  • Undertake risk assessments, and site inspections, and identify potential hazards.
  • Lead in-house training sessions to address health and safety topics with cross-functional teams.
  • Monitor and stay updated on new legislation, industry trends, and best practices.
  • Manage the administration of health and safety tasks, including incident reporting and workers' compensation cases in conjunction with the WSIB disability specialist.
  • Coordinate inspections and implement corrective measures while maintaining records and statistics.
  • Integrate and manage KPI tracking for health and safety performance into regular operations meetings.
  • Demonstrate company values, work with integrity, and be a supportive Team Member.
  • Comply with the Health & Safety policies of the company and inform Management of unsafe working conditions.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Experience
  • Three to five years prior experience in a manufacturing setting working in a dedicated Health & Safety Role.
  • Formal education and/or training in Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent experience.
  • Certified Health and Safety Professional e.g., ASP/CRST, CSP/CRSP®/PSAC®, or CHSC would be an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of the OHSA/OSHA and other related Health and Safety legislation.
  • Safety knowledge in Fall Protection, Heat Stress, Safe Lifting, and WHMIS.
  • Ability to be the visible, front-line representative for health and safety on site.
  • Strong administrative, multi-tasking, time management, and planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication (both written and verbal), and relationship-building skills.
  • Flexible, open, and approachable attitude.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as within a collaborative team setting.
  • Proven competency in fostering a Health & Safety environment.
  • Proven facilitation, verbal, and written communication skills along with superior interpersonal and organizational skills required to deliver training and coaching to teams and individuals at all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment within specified timeframes and where attention to detail and effective multi-tasking is essential.
