What is a Headless WordPress developer?

A Headless WordPress developer is a professional who builds websites or applications using WordPress as a backend content management system (CMS), while the frontend is handled by separate technologies, such as React, Vue, or Angular. This approach allows developers to create highly customized, fast, and scalable user interfaces that are decoupled from the traditional WordPress themes. Headless WordPress setups often use the WordPress REST API or GraphQL to deliver content to the frontend. This method is popular for organizations seeking flexibility, improved performance, and modern web development practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Headless WordPress Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Headless WordPress Developer, you need strong expertise in WordPress, JavaScript (especially React or Vue), REST and GraphQL APIs, and a background in web development. Familiarity with tools like Node.js, headless CMS frameworks, deployment platforms, and experience with version control systems like Git are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help developers integrate content and front-end solutions effectively. These skills are essential to deliver flexible, performant digital experiences that meet modern web standards and business needs.

What is the difference between Headless Wordpress vs WordPress Developer?

AspectHeadless Wordpress
Primary FocusDecoupled content management and frontend development
Skills RequiredAPI integration, JavaScript frameworks, backend setup
Work EnvironmentWeb development teams, often in tech or digital agencies
CertificationsKnowledge of REST APIs, JavaScript, and CMS platforms

While Headless Wordpress involves using Wordpress as a backend CMS with a separate frontend, a WordPress Developer typically focuses on building and customizing traditional Wordpress sites. The former emphasizes API-driven architecture and modern frontend tech, whereas the latter specializes in theme and plugin development within the Wordpress ecosystem.

What are some common challenges faced when managing a Headless WordPress implementation, and how can they be addressed?

Managing a Headless WordPress implementation often involves coordinating between front-end and back-end teams, ensuring seamless API integrations, and maintaining security for exposed endpoints. Job seekers should be prepared to troubleshoot compatibility issues between decoupled systems and optimize performance for dynamic content delivery. Effective communication with developers and staying updated on best practices for REST or GraphQL APIs can help address these challenges and ensure a smooth workflow.

MESH is a creative brand agency that believes true partnerships drive everything we do. For over 20 years, weve combined deep listening with strategic thinking and collaborative creativity to deliver work that moves the needle forward for our clients.

Were looking for a Senior Web Developer who cares as much about craft as they do about curiosity. You see every project as a chance to do it better. You lose sleep over accessibility (in the best way). Youre already experimenting with AI-assisted development and excited to help define what that looks like in a real agency workflow. And you want to be part of conversations, not just handed tickets.

What Youll Do

Build & Architect

  • Design and develop custom WordPress themes using modern PHP best practices; Timber/Twig, ACF Pro, and block-based architecture
  • Build in Webflow when its the right tool for the job or fits the clients needs
  • Ensure every build meets WCAG 2.1 AA, Core Web Vitals standards, and semantic HTML best practices
  • Integrate third-party APIs, headless data sources, and custom data layers

Oversee & Elevate Quality

  • Review and give constructive feedback on work from outsourced contributors
  • Establish coding standards, documentation practices, and QA processes for the team
  • Conduct performance audits and implement fixes for load time, query efficiency, and rendering bottlenecks

Plan & Collaborate

  • Join client discovery and scoping calls to define technical requirements and level of effort
  • Develop sprint plans with account and project management teams
  • Translate Figma designs into precise, responsive, performant front-end experiences

Push the Craft Forward

  • Lead MESHs exploration of AI-assisted development, we use Claude Code and are actively shaping our vibe coding workflow
  • Evaluate and advocate for tools and workflows that meaningfully improve how we build
  • Help evolve CI/CD pipelines and deployment practices across client environments

What You Bring

Required

  • 35 years of professional WordPress development, including custom theme development
  • Strong PHP proficiency with modern best practices
  • Hands-on experience with Timber/Twig, ACF Pro, and Gravity Forms
  • Solid HTML, CSS, and JavaScript fundamentals, Git, and version-controlled workflows
  • Deep commitment to web accessibility, you know WCAG, apply it, and advocate for it
  • Familiarity with performance optimization and Core Web Vitals
  • Comfortable on client-facing calls and scoping conversations

Preferred

  • Webflow project experience
  • Agency background managing multiple client projects simultaneously
  • CI/CD and deployment tooling (GitHub Actions, DeployHQ, WP Engine, etc.)
  • Google Analytics, Search Console, and Tag Manager Experience
  • Experience with Figma and design handoffs
  • Knowledge of Craft CMS, Drupal or other open source CMS platforms
  • Experience with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar)

Requirements

  • Candidate must be able to present valid U.S. Work Authorization documents
  • Candidate must demonstrate verbal and written mastery of the English language
  • Candidate may be required to travel to attend in-person meetings with clients (such as Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia)
  • If remote, quarterly travel to headquarters for in-person group check-ins
  • Working hours are Central Standard Time

Why MESH

We offer competitive compensation, strong benefits, and a hybrid working environment. More than that, a team that goes all in, tells the truth, and genuinely has fun doing the work. If you want a place where your craft is valued and your curiosity is rewarded, lets talk.
