Summary

The Deck Lead supports the daily operational success of the swim school by maintaining flow, safety, and consistency throughout each shift. This role ensures that swimmers, families, and instructors have a positive experience and that all staff maintain high standards of safety, communication, and program execution. The Deck Lead serves as the primary on-deck support for instructors and as a liaison between parents, instructors, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Maintain a constant presence on the pool deck to ensure safety, consistency, and support for instructors.
  • Communicate lesson start and end times to instructors; monitor pacing and schedule flow.
  • Review daily schedules in Jackrabbit and Evolia and proactively address any issues.
  • Confirm instructors and classes are assigned to the correct bin colors.
  • Conduct full facility walk-throughs throughout the shift to identify and eliminate hazards.
  • Verify pool chemistry levels and monitor chemical controller readings.
  • Manage swimmer traffic in and out of the pool to maintain class flow and safety.
  • Guide viewing room guests on where to go, when to head to the pool deck, and what to expect.
  • Serve as the communication bridge between parents and instructors, minimizing unnecessary deck traffic.
  • Communicate student level changes, schedule adjustments, and instructor feedback to parents and admins.
  • Check on students listed for advancement evaluations and support the advancement process.
  • Lead and delegate cleaning, opening, and closing duties (tarps, hose, walk-throughs, etc.).
  • Assist with lessons as needed, including entering the water during call-outs or safety needs.
  • Coach staff during the shift and follow up with team members based on observed interactions.
  • Complete required shift reporting and document all significant interactions in OneTeam360.
  • Ensure closing procedures and facility security are completed at the end of the shift.

Requirements

Job Requirements
  • Must be an internal Premier Swim Academy team member in good standing.
  • Must have availability for Wednesday - Saturday.
  • Minimum 3 months of experience as a Swim Instructor or Deck Support role (or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of PSA lesson structure, advancement process, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to proactively identify hazards and take corrective action.
  • Confident communication skills with parents, instructors, and admins.
  • Ability to lead by example and provide on-the-spot coaching.
  • Comfortable performing in-water work, including assisting with lessons.
  • Ability to stand/walk on the pool deck for extended periods in a warm and humid environment.
  • Availability to reliably cover scheduled shifts and occasional sub needs.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a current StarGuard Elite Lifeguard Certification.
Physical Demands

While performing this role, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, crouch, communicate clearly, and maintain awareness of the surrounding environment. Regular use of hands for reaching and typing is required. The employee must be able to swim, teach an average of 10 hours per week, and demonstrate proficiency in swim instruction. Lifting or assisting children up to 50 pounds may be required. The employee must be able to enter the water quickly in an emergency or if needed for lessons.

Environmental Conditions

The work environment is warm and humid around the pool, with moderate to loud noise levels. All staff must follow required safety precautions to ensure a safe environment for swimmers and coworkers.
