Job description

SanTan Brewing Company is looking for a Craft Beer Brewer to join our team in Chandler, AZ.
Located in the Phoenix metro's East Valley, SanTan was founded in 2007 in downtown Chandler, where we continue to operate a 15-bbl brewery & restaurant in our original location. In 2013, we added a production facility with a 50-bbl brewhouse, where we package beer in both cans and draft. SanTan branched out into distilled spirits in 2017 and is now Arizona's largest distillery in addition to our brewery.
The Craft Beer Brewer will report to the Head Brewer and Production Facility's Operation Manager while joining a team of 100+ production and restaurant staff. Brewery personnel also move between our main production plant and brewpub restaurant, brewing on each of 3 systems.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Communicate and treat fellow co-workers and other members of the SanTan team with respect
  • Adhere to a "Safety Always" mindset and comply with safety policies & programs
  • Approach every task with quality in mind, paying attention to detail & accuracy
  • Raw ingredient receiving/management
  • Operate brewhouse with maximum attention to detail and accuracy (milling, mashing, lautering, proper gravities, etc.)
  • Perform cellar duties as assigned (filter, carbonate, transfer/keg)
  • Ensuring that all reporting is done accurately and on time
  • Yeast management (harvesting, pitching and counts/viabilities)
  • Tank management (gravity checks, trub dumps and dry-hopping)
  • CIP/Sanitization on all vessels (fermenters, heat exchanger, mash tun, kettle, and brite beer tanks)
  • Mash press cleaning including removal of spent grain
  • Troubleshooting, technical maintenance and quality assurance
  • Maintain an inventory of raw materials & brewery supplies
  • Effectively use all brewing equipment to safety and operational standards
  • Travel between company locations
  • Operate heavy equipment and company vehicles as needed including forklifts and large trucks and trailers.
  • The employee will be frequently exposed to wet, cold, hot or humid conditions/temperatures.
  • Machinery operation and repair may require the use of safety equipment to include: eye safety glasses, hearing protection, work boots, hardhats, and energy Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) equipment.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
  • Availability to rotate in to closing shift, typically 2pm - 10pm and open shift, typically 5 am - 1 pm
  • 6 months of experience working in multiple facets of a brewery
  • Strong technical knowledge of brewing, fermentation and the finishing stage of beer production
  • Fermentation/Brewing degree or certificate from an accredited college preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical systems
  • A great attitude and passion for craft beer

All candidates are expected to be able to:
  • Have a strong focus on quality, safety and efficiency, constantly evaluating work practices in the spirit of "always improving".
  • Lift up to 65 pounds repeatedly and maneuver 175 lbs. kegs as needed.
  • Twist/turn, reach over shoulders and stand/walk on a continual basis.
  • Work on your feet for over eight hours at a time.
  • Work in extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.
  • Work safely with chemicals of varying composition.
  • Work in damp/wet areas.
  • Multi-task and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Work independently as well as be a team player.
  • Possess a strong mechanical ability with problem solving/troubleshooting skills.
  • Work all shifts, additional hours & weekends as necessary
  • Possess a desire to learn and grow with the company and maintain a positive attitude
  • Operate a pallet jack and complete forklift certification
  • Be an open and good communicator. Respect for fellow co-workers, supervisors, and managers.
