Hazardous Material Technician

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Environmental Compliance the Hazardous Material Technician will be responsible for managing the University's hazardous waste and hazardous materials management programs.
Essential Functions
  • Following established technical and safety guidelines, collect and transport hazardous materials and/or waste from individual generation sites (e.g. laboratories; workshops; mechanical rooms; etc.); ensure accuracy and quality assurance; proper packaging, marking and compatibility; complete associated paperwork and data entry for record keeping; manage required supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinate the disposal of hazardous waste with the University's vendors.
  • Conduct routine environmental assessments and audits to ensure compliance with the University's hazardous material management programs.
  • Provide emergency response to hazardous material releases; Implement and manage the University's Hazardous Material Emergency Response Plan.
  • Maintain the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) database for all hazardous materials at the University.
  • Develop and implement written programs to demonstrate compliance with Federal, State and Local Regulations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulatory information recommending appropriate changes to current policies and compliance programs.
  • Develop and implement mass flow analysis or assessments and waste minimization plans for various University generators and/or satellite accumulation areas.
  • Interface with supervisors and managers to resolve hazardous material issues and discrepancies.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of an Associate's Degree in a relevant field or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Valid PA and/or NJ driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of database management software and PC-based application programs.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Lifting demands ≤ 50lbs

This position is classified as Exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $47,490.00 to $71,230.00 per year.
