What is hardware testing?

Hardware testing is the process of evaluating and verifying the functionality, performance, and reliability of physical devices and components, such as circuit boards, processors, and electronic assemblies. It involves running tests to ensure that the hardware meets design specifications and operates correctly under various conditions. Hardware testers may use specialized equipment and software to identify defects, measure performance, and confirm compatibility with other systems. This process is critical for ensuring that products are safe, reliable, and ready for market release.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in hardware testing roles?

Hardware testing professionals often encounter challenges related to troubleshooting complex system failures, keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies, and meeting tight project deadlines. They must work closely with design and engineering teams to replicate and diagnose issues, which requires strong communication and analytical skills. Additionally, balancing thorough testing with the need for timely product releases can be demanding, making effective time management and prioritization essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware testing engineer?

To thrive as a Hardware Testing Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, circuit analysis, and test design, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with testing tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, automated test equipment, and industry certifications like ISTQB are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate product validation, reduce errors, and facilitate efficient product development cycles.

What is the difference between Hardware Testing vs Hardware Design?

AspectHardware TestingHardware Design
Primary FocusVerifying and validating hardware functionality and reliabilityCreating and developing hardware components and schematics
Required SkillsTesting procedures, troubleshooting, knowledge of testing toolsCircuit design, CAD tools, technical specifications
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, testing labs, manufacturing facilitiesDesign studios, engineering offices, R&D labs
CertificationsHardware testing certifications, electronics certificationsElectrical engineering degrees, design certifications

Hardware Testing and Hardware Design are distinct roles within the hardware development process. Testing focuses on verifying hardware functionality, while design involves creating hardware solutions. Both roles require technical skills but serve different stages of product development.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

HARDWARE RELIABILITY ENGINEER (STARSHIELD)

Starshield leverages SpaceXโ€™s Starlink technology and launch capability to support national security efforts. While Starlink is designed for consumer and commercial use, Starshield is designed for government use, with an initial focus on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads.

As a Hardware Reliability Engineer for Starshield, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and performance of our satellites. You will work on identifying, analyzing, and resolving hardware failures to improve the robustness and longevity of our PCBAs. This role involves collaborating with crossโ€‘functional teams, including electrical, mechanical, software, and supply chain, to enhance the overall reliability of the Starshield hardware. This is an opportunity to work on cuttingโ€‘edge R&D technology and some of the most complex applications of electrical engineering in the industry.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform detailed failure analysis of Starshield satellite hardware, identifying root causes of failures and implementing corrective actions.
  • Utilize design schematics, test equipment, and inspection processes to identify the physics of the failure.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to improve product reliability and manufacturing processes.
  • Work closely with the respective test engineers for your products to keep a close feedback loop improving test assets; to reduce false failures and increase test coverage to avoid escapes.
  • Monitor yield rates and quality metrics, driving corrective actions to address non-conforming products.
  • Conduct benchtop environmental testing to validate product robustness.
  • Support production and field operations by providing technical guidance on failure resolution and process improvements.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of failure analysis findings, test results, and corrective actions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or other engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years of experience in hardware development, failure analysis, or reliability engineering (internships and coโ€‘ops acceptable).
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Masterโ€™s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of industry experience working with electronic hardware.
  • Experience with digital and mixed-signal designs, power electronics, or RF electronics using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, and soldering equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and root causing electrical hardware failures.
  • Experience with environmental testing such as HALT/HASS, thermal, vibration, and TVAC.
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python, C/C++) for test automation and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of quality tools such as Lean principles, Six Sigma, root cause analysis, and corrective action.
  • Experience developing or supporting any of the following products/processes:
    • Analog, digital, and mixed signal circuit testing.
    • RF hardware testing.
    • Design for excellence (DFX), derating, and related analyses.
    • Digital communications interfaces including SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, and RS422.
    • Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Active Top Secret, Top Secret SCI, or DOE Level Q clearance, or the ability and willingness to obtain one.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Able to work extended hours and weekends as needed to support critical path development and/or critical onโ€‘orbit operations.
  • An active clearance may provide the opportunity for you to work on sensitive SpaceX missions; if so, you will be subject to preโ€‘employment drug and random drug and alcohol test.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:

Hardware Reliability Engineer/Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00/per year
Hardware Reliability Engineer/Level II: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a caseโ€‘byโ€‘case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for longโ€‘term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or longโ€‘term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
