What Does a Hair Model Do?

A hair model participates in photoshoots and promotional events for a salon, fashion designer, or other company in the beauty industry. In this career, you may also work as a model for demonstrations for salons or manufacturers of hairstyle products, such as conditioner and coloring products. Your responsibilities outside of work include taking good care of your hair, going out to audition for gigs, and trying to get signed with a modeling agency. At work, your duties include standing for photographers or stylists as they prepare and do a photoshoot.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hair Model, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hair Model, you need healthy hair, a versatile look, and the ability to follow styling directions, typically supported by a strong portfolio and agency representation. Familiarity with photo shoot processes, runway presentation, and understanding of hair care products are commonly used in this role. Professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, and confidence are essential soft skills that help models stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial for meeting client expectations, maintaining hair health, and ensuring successful collaborations with stylists and photographers.

What should I expect during a typical hair modeling assignment, and how can I prepare for it?

During a typical hair modeling assignment, you may be asked to undergo various hair treatments, cuts, or color changes to showcase a stylist's work or a brand's products. Preparation often includes following specific pre-appointment instructions, such as arriving with clean, product-free hair and being open to changes in your hairstyle. Flexibility and communication are key, as you may need to collaborate closely with stylists and photographers to achieve the desired look. It's also important to understand the terms of the assignment, including any aftercare or maintenance required post-session.
