Job description

The Ultrasound Technologist IV may serve as a modality specialist, or advancedlevel dual certified including RVT; responsible for performing highly specialized Ultrasound procedures. The role requires expertlevel sonography technical skills, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently across a wide range of complex imaging scenarios and patient populations. The Ultrasound Technologist IV serves as a primary resource for staff, leads interdepartmental committee work, and supports policy, protocol, and QA program development. The Ultrasound Technologist IV supports radiologists during specialized procedures, assists with workflow coordination, performs equipment quality control, ensures adherence to sonography protocols, and may guide or support less experienced sonographers. The role plays a key part in ensuring exemplary patient care, operational efficiency, and clinical quality across locations.  

Essential Functions:

  • Leads and performs advanced ultrasound examinations, specialty imaging, using expertlevel positioning, scanning, and optimization techniques to produce highquality diagnostic studies. 
  • Verify orders and indications, ensuring the prescription matches the intended procedure; update exam titles/billing codes as appropriate and document patient symptoms and history. 
  • Explain procedures clearly and compassionately, prepare and position patients, and ensure safety, comfort, and understanding throughout the examination. 
  • Operate and adjust complex ultrasound equipment, selecting appropriate transducers and modifying settings based on anatomy, clinical indication, and procedural requirements. 
  • Document exam data accurately, entering patient information into ultrasound systems and ensuring timely transmission to PACS/RIS with complete labeling and measurement sets. 
  • Compile and present prior imaging with current studies, providing radiologists and cardiologists with a comprehensive set of diagnostic materials for interpretation. 
  • Support advanced or procedural imaging, including assisting with breast biopsies, MSK exams, and vein mapping. 
  • Perform operational support tasks, including stocking supplies, making reminder calls, completing daily equipment checks, troubleshooting technical issues, and maintaining exam room readiness. 
  • Provide supervisory or sitelevel guidance, including training staff, supporting workflow coordination, offering technical expertise to peers, and assisting administrators as needed. 
  • Uphold all quality, safety, and regulatory standards, including infection control, HIPAA, timeout procedures, and emergency readiness, while ensuring professional, patientcentered care in all interactions. 
  • Helps maintain QA standards, identifies process improvement opportunities, and collaborates on development and revision of protocols

Education:

  • Technical Program: Diagnostic Medical Sonography

License/Certification:

  • BLS
  • ARDMS (RDMS) to include Vascular (RVT)

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of four years of experience in an ambulatory or hospital setting 

  • Knowledge of customer service concepts and ambulatory policies including safety, privacy and HIPAA regulations 

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Expertlevel knowledge of advanced ultrasound and specialty sonographic procedures (breast, MSK), and complex exam protocols. 
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices, workflow operations, and quality assurance standards, including training methods, performance guidance, and crossfunctional coordination. 
  • Advanced sonographic imaging and optimization skills, including mastery of Doppler, spectral analysis, and procedural ultrasound support (biopsies, vein mapping). 
  • Highlevel technical proficiency with ultrasound equipment, clinical software, RIS/PACS systems, and exam documentation, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance. 
  • Ability to lead, coach, and support team members, including providing instruction, resolving workflow challenges, and assisting leadership with operational needs.
  • Ability to manage complex caseloads independently, prioritize urgent exams, adapt to diverse diagnostic scenarios, and maintain compassionate, effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
