Description

The CNC Horizontal Setup Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC horizontal machining centers to produce precision parts that meet quality, safety, and production standards. This role requires strong blueprint reading skills, knowledge of tooling and fixturing, and the ability to independently perform machine setups with minimal supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform complete machine setups on CNC horizontal machining centers, including loading programs, setting tools, offsets, and fixtures
  • Interpret blueprints, GD&T, routings, and work instructions to ensure accurate part production
  • Select, install, and adjust tooling, fixtures, and workholding devices
  • Conduct first-article inspections and make necessary adjustments to ensure parts meet specifications
  • Monitor machine performance and part quality throughout the production run
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and setup issues to minimize downtime and scrap
  • Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to setups, offsets, and inspections
  • Follow all safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and keep work area clean and organized
  • Collaborate with programmers, supervisors, and quality personnel to resolve production issues

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training preferred
  • 3+ years of CNC machining experience, with demonstrated setup experience on horizontal machining centers
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T
  • Proficient with measuring and inspection tools
  • Solid understanding of cutting tools, feeds and speeds, and machining processes
  • Experience working with CNC controls (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, or similar)
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions during setups
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without assistance
  • Manual dexterity to handle tools, fixtures, and precision instruments

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing shop environment with exposure to noise, oils, coolants, and moving machinery
  • Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Experience with palletized horizontal machining centers
  • Basic CNC program editing at the machine
  • Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience
