Responsibilities

The Respiratory Care Clinical Specialist will assist in assuring competencies and training such that Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCPs) are both clinically and technically current with American Association of Respiratory Care Clinical Care Practice Guidelines for the practice of Respiratory Care. This associate will be responsible for the maintenance of an orientation manual, the orientation and precepting of respiratory therapists to include associate file maintenance (exception to this sentence: neonatal registered respiratory therapists). The Clinical Specialist may also be responsible for the maintenance of departmental policies and procedures as directed by the Clinical Manager for Respiratory Care. The RC Clinical Specialist for GWP may provide direct patient care as assigned. The RC Clinical Specialist for GWP may represent the Department of Respiratory Care on hospital or departmental committees or teams. This associate will coordinate responsibility for the clinical rotation of Respiratory Care students at GWP.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs aerosolized medication delivery per policy.
  • Performs oxygen administration per policy.
  • Performs bronchial hygiene therapies per policy.
  • Performs patient assessment per policy (ie: evaluation and treatment, obstructive sleep apnea, emergency intervention, etc).
  • Performs arterial blood gas puncture, analysis and analyzer troubleshooting per policy.
  • Performs EKG's per policy.
  • Performs bedside spirometry and peak flow measurement per policy.
  • Performs non-invasive mechanical ventilation per policy.
  • Performs all modalities of mechanical ventilation per policy.
  • Performs airway maintenance per policy.
  • Performs endotracheal intubation and extubation per policy.
  • Performs transtracheal catheter care per policy.
  • Performs airway suctioning per policy.
  • Performs pulse oximetry per policy.
  • Performs arterial line draws per policy.
  • Performs CliniVision documentation per policy.
  • Performs associate orientation and internal competency checkoff for GWP.
  • Coordinates the department's education program for GWP in cooperation with Adult/Ped clinical specialist.
  • Assists with policy and procedure maintenance.
  • Coordinates annual and ongoing competency assessment for GWP.
  • Coordinates student rotations for GWP with Adult/Peds Clinical Specialist.
  • Performs High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation per policy.
  • Assumes responsibility for orientation and cross training to GWP for RC associates.
  • Communicates with the manager of Respiratory Care any issues or concerns with Clinical competency for associates providing respiratory care at GWP.
  • Completes all checkoffs and orientation forms and forward as requested.
  • Qualifications

    REQUIRED:

  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Current licensure by the state of Georgia as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)..
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Clean-shaven to meet fit testing standards for NIOSH approved respiratory protection.
  • Georgia Department of Human Resources (GDHR) technologist status.
  • Five (5) years' experience in both adult and pediatric respiratory care.
  • Ability to prepare and present educational material in a clear and logical manner.
  • Technical Competencies:

  • Performs arterial line draws per policy.

  • Coordinates the department's education program.
  • Assists with policy and procedure maintenance.
  • Coordinates annual and ongoing competency assessment.
  • Coordinates student rotations.
