Gurobi Cplex information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optimization specialist using Gurobi and CPLEX, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optimization Specialist using Gurobi and CPLEX, you need a strong background in mathematics, operations research, and computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in optimization modeling languages (such as Python, AMPL, or OPL), hands-on experience with Gurobi and CPLEX solvers, and familiarity with relevant certifications or training are highly valuable. Exceptional analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and clear communication skills set top candidates apart. These skills ensure effective development and deployment of optimization models that solve complex business problems efficiently and accurately.

What are Gurobi and CPLEX?

Gurobi and CPLEX are advanced mathematical optimization solvers used to solve complex linear, mixed-integer, and quadratic programming problems. They are widely used in operations research, data science, and engineering fields to find the best solutions under given constraints. Both solvers offer powerful APIs for integration with programming languages such as Python, Java, and C++. Organizations use Gurobi and CPLEX to optimize logistics, scheduling, resource allocation, and various decision-making processes.

What is the difference between Gurobi Cplex vs Operations Research Analyst?

AspectGurobi CplexOperations Research Analyst
Required CredentialsAdvanced degree in math, CS, OR; certifications often preferredBachelor's or master's in OR, math, or related fields
Work EnvironmentSoftware development, optimization modeling, technical analysisData analysis, problem-solving, report writing
Industry UsageSupply chain, finance, manufacturing, techLogistics, consulting, government, corporate sectors

Gurobi Cplex is a software tool used for optimization modeling, requiring technical skills and programming knowledge. Operations Research Analysts utilize such tools but focus more on analyzing data and applying optimization techniques to solve complex problems. While both roles overlap in industry and skills, Gurobi Cplex is a specialized software, whereas Operations Research Analysts are professionals who use such tools to inform decision-making.

What types of projects or problems does a Gurobi/CPLEX specialist typically work on within a team setting?

As a Gurobi/CPLEX specialist, you will often collaborate with data scientists, operations researchers, and software engineers to tackle complex optimization problems such as supply chain planning, scheduling, or logistics. Your responsibilities may include modeling mathematical formulations, fine-tuning solver parameters, and integrating optimization solutions into larger business applications. Effective communication is key, as you’ll need to translate business requirements into mathematical models and explain results to non-technical stakeholders. The role offers opportunities to work on diverse projects and to continuously learn about new industry applications of optimization technology.

About the Role

About Avathon

We're hiring a Senior AI Scientist (Transportation & Logistics) at Avathon — where AI meets the real world.
This is a high-impact role at the intersection of operations research, reinforcement learning, and large-scale data systems, focused on building intelligent solutions that transform transportation and logistics networks.

We are looking for a Senior AI Scientist to lead the design and deployment of advanced optimization and machine learning systems across complex transportation ecosystems. You will work on real-world challenges such as routing, scheduling, network optimization, demand forecasting, and asset utilization across multimodal logistics environments including FCL, LCL, FTL, LTL, intermodal, and maritime transportation.

This role offers the opportunity to drive innovation in vessel scheduling, container repositioning, fleet optimization, and dynamic routing, while collaborating closely with engineering, product, and operations teams to bring scalable AI solutions into production.

Key Responsibilities

AI/ML Model Development

  • Design and implement advanced models for:
  • Fleet optimization and capacity planning
  • Vehicle routing and scheduling (VRP, TSP variants)
  • Demand forecasting and optimization
  • Apply reinforcement learning, optimization algorithms, and hybrid ML + OR approaches

Transportation Domain Solutions

Build solutions for:

  • Maritime logistics (vessel scheduling, port operations)
  • Container repositioning and imbalance optimization
  • Truckload (FTL), less-than-truckload (LTL), and intermodal routing
  • Incorporate real-world constraints (time windows, capacity, regulations, SLAs)

AI Engineering & Deployment
