What is a guardianship?

A guardianship job involves acting as a legal guardian for individuals who are unable to make decisions for themselves due to age, disability, or incapacity. Guardians are responsible for making decisions about healthcare, finances, and daily living to ensure the well-being of the person under their care. This role can be appointed by a court and requires acting in the best interests of the individual while following legal guidelines.

What are some of the typical challenges faced when working in a guardianship role?

Professionals in guardianship roles frequently encounter complex situations such as balancing the best interests of wards with legal or family dynamics and managing multiple cases simultaneously. The work often involves collaborating with courts, healthcare providers, and family members, which requires clear communication and conflict resolution skills. You may be responsible for attending hearings, preparing reports, and making critical, time-sensitive decisions regarding the welfare of those under your care. While these challenges can be demanding, many guardians find the work deeply rewarding due to the positive impact they have on the lives of vulnerable individuals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the guardianship position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Guardianship role, a thorough understanding of legal frameworks, case management, and documentation is essential, often supported by certifications in guardianship or social work. Familiarity with case management software, court systems, and state-specific regulations is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, compassion, and sound judgment are crucial for working effectively with wards, families, and legal professionals. These competencies ensure that vulnerable individuals are protected, legal standards are met, and complex, sensitive situations are handled with care and professionalism.

How do I become a paid guardian?

To become a paid guardian, you typically need to be appointed by a court and may require relevant training, background checks, and certification depending on local laws. Guardians often work for government agencies, legal firms, or private clients, and must demonstrate responsibility and understanding of legal and care responsibilities. Compensation varies based on jurisdiction and the complexity of the guardianship case.

Guardianship and Trusteeship Specialist

Are you passionate about working with Albertans with disabilities and supporting your local community? Do you have what it takes to champion our vision to Inspire Potential, Build Community, and Enrich Lives?

Easter Seals Alberta (ESA) is a provincial not-for-profit organization that has been in existence for over 75 years. Our mission is to provide services that foster inclusion, independence, and well-being for individuals with disabilities and medical conditions. We strive to ensure that the resources Albertans need for an independent and fulfilling life are available.

Reporting to the Family Resource & Program Manager, the Guardianship & Trusteeship Specialist manages a caseload of clients, providing education, coordinating applications, facilitating documentation, and supporting families from initial consultation through application submission and follow-up. The role promotes continuity of care by integrating Guardianship and Trusteeship planning into broader transition-to-adulthood planning and collaborating closely with Resource Coordinators, Social Workers, healthcare professionals, legal representatives, and government partners.

The Specialist is responsible for ensuring all services are delivered in accordance with the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act, organizational policies, privacy legislation, and best practices. This position maintains accurate documentation, provides exceptional client service, identifies barriers to successful transitions, and delivers services using a person-centered, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach.

Responsibilities
  • Educate youth, adults with disabilities, families, caregivers, and professionals on Alberta's Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act, legal decision-making options, eligibility requirements, and application processes.
  • Coordinate and manage Guardianship and Trusteeship applications from intake through completion and submission.
  • Assist families with completing first-time desk applications, hearing applications, revisions, and court review applications.
  • Review application packages for accuracy, completeness, and legislative compliance before submission.
  • Coordinate appointments with applicants, capacity assessors, family members, and other required parties.
  • Commission legal documentation as a Commissioner for Oaths where applicable.
  • Monitor application progress and maintain communication with government departments and families throughout the application process.
  • Troubleshoot application issues and resolve barriers that may delay approvals or impact client outcomes.
  • Support families in accessing additional community, legal, financial, and disability-related resources as appropriate.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case consultations and transition planning meetings.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with government departments and community partners to facilitate efficient service delivery.
  • Ensure all records comply with organizational policies, privacy legislation, accreditation standards, and legal requirements.
  • Track client outcomes, application status, service statistics, and reporting requirements.
  • Identify trends, service gaps, and opportunities for program improvement.
  • Participate in quality assurance initiatives, file reviews, and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Remain current with changes to legislation, government policies, and best practices related to Guardianship and Trusteeship.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, training, and organizational initiatives.
  • Represent Easter Seals Alberta professionally within the community and foster positive relationships with clients, families, funders, and community partners.
  • Be a Team Lead for the G&T Specialists and be a mentor within the team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Legal studies, Disability Studies, or a related human services field.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working in case management or legal assistant experience with vulnerable populations.
  • Experience supporting families through legal, government, or disability service systems is preferred.
  • Experience with Alberta's Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act and related legislation is considered an asset.
  • Experience in case management, service coordination, transition planning, or systems navigation is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Alberta disability services, including PDD, FSCD, AISH, and other community supports.
  • Strong understanding of Alberta's Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship legislation and legal decision-making processes.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and case coordination abilities.
  • Ability to interpret legislation, policies, and procedural requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and electronic case management systems.
Other

  • Requires a Clear Enhanced Police Information Check.
  • Position is full-time, in-office.
What We Have to Offer
