Job description

Let's face it, a company whose mission is human transformation better have some fresh thinking about the employer/employee relationship.
We do. We can't cram it all in here, but you'll start noticing it from the first interview.
Even our candidate experience is different. And when you get an offer from us (and accept it), you get way more than a paycheck. You get a personal BetterUp Coach, a development plan, a trained and coached manager, the most amazing team you've ever met (yes, each with their own personal BetterUp Coach), and most importantly, work that matters.
This makes for a remarkably focused and fulfilling work experience. Frankly, it's not for everyone. But for people with fire in their belly, it's a game-changing, career-defining, soul-lifting move.
Join us and we promise you the most intense and fulfilling years of your career, doing life-changing work in a fun, inventive, soulful culture.
If that sounds exciting-and the job description below feels like a fit-we really should start talking.
About the Team & Your Impact
BetterUp is pioneering human transformation at scale-and design plays a central role in that mission. We're evolving from a suite of products to an intelligent, adaptive platform that powers transformative experiences for individuals and organizations worldwide.
As Staff Product Designer, Growth, you'll own the full Growth surface at BetterUp. This is a high-leverage, high-visibility role at the top of the funnel-where design quality directly moves the metrics that matter most to the business.
You'll partner closely with Growth product managers, engineers, data scientists, and marketing to drive experimentation velocity, raise the craft bar on lifecycle communications, and define the end-to-end experience that turns new users into engaged ones.
What You'll Do
  • Own the end-to-end design strategy and execution for BetterUp's full Growth surface-including conversion experiments, onboarding, lifecycle and transactional communications, and auth flows.
  • Lead growth test design: rapidly ideate, prototype, and iterate on conversion and activation experiments in partnership with product and data science.
  • Define and evolve the onboarding experience-shaping the new user journey from first touch to time-to-value, reducing friction, and building habit.
  • Own emails and messages: design lifecycle and transactional communications that are clear, on-brand, and drive meaningful engagement.
  • Design and maintain sign-up, login, and identity flows that are seamless, secure, and optimized for conversion at the top of the funnel.
  • Translate ambiguous growth briefs into clear design frameworks and testable hypotheses that guide teams toward measurable outcomes.
  • Partner with senior product, engineering, and marketing leaders to shape Growth's product direction and long-term roadmap.
  • Mentor designers and elevate design craft across the Growth team-through critique, feedback, and hands-on guidance.

What You'll Bring
  • 7+ years of product design experience, with meaningful depth in Growth, conversion optimization, or funnel-stage product surfaces.
  • Proven track record running and learning from high-cadence design experiments-you're comfortable shipping fast and iterating on signal.
  • Experience designing onboarding flows, email/notification systems, and auth experiences for consumer or B2B SaaS products.
  • A portfolio demonstrating both sharp interaction design craft and a data-informed approach to design decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence product direction at a senior leadership level.
  • Experience mentoring designers and fostering both autonomy and alignment on cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication skills and a track record of aligning stakeholders around a shared design vision.

You'll Thrive Here If You
  • Get energized by the intersection of design craft and growth metrics-you care about beauty and business outcomes equally.
  • Love the constraint of experimentation: small bets, fast learning, compounding gains.
  • Bring both strategic depth and hands-on excellence to every problem.
  • Navigate ambiguity with curiosity, clarity, and conviction.
  • Care deeply about human growth and helping people live with more clarity, purpose, and passion.

AI at BetterUp
Our team thrives at the intersection of human expertise and AI capability. As an AI-forward company, adaptation and continuous learning are part of our daily work. We're looking for teammates who are excited to evolve alongside technology - people who experiment boldly, share their discoveries openly, and help define best practices for AI-augmented work. These professionals thoughtfully integrate AI into their work to deliver exceptional results while maintaining the human judgment and creativity that drives real innovation. During our interview process, you'll have opportunities to showcase how you harness AI to learn, iterate, and amplify your impact.
As a Staff Product Designer, you'll:
  • Anticipate industry-shifting AI capabilities and position BetterUp to leverage them ahead of competitors in how we design and build product experiences.
  • Lead enterprise-wide AI transformation initiatives within the Design org that span multiple functions and product surfaces.
  • Drive technical vision for how AI will reshape product capabilities and development practices over 3-5 year horizons.
  • Build AI research and experimentation programs that discover breakthrough design applications before they become industry standard.
  • Mentor senior leaders and peers on AI strategy, helping them think critically about emerging technologies and their implications for design craft.

During our interview process, you'll have opportunities to showcase how you harness AI to learn, iterate, and amplify your impact. We encourage all candidates to share examples of how they've used AI tools in their work-whether Figma plugins, generative design tools, or AI-powered user research analysis.
Benefits:
At BetterUp, we are committed to living out our mission every day and that starts with providing benefits that allow our employees to care for themselves, support their families, and give back to their community.
  • Access to BetterUp coaching; one for you and one for a friend or family member
  • A competitive compensation plan with opportunity for advancement
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible paid time off
  • Per year:
    • All federal/statutory holidays observed
    • 4 BetterUp Inner Workdays (https://www.betterup.co/inner-work)
    • 5 Volunteer Days to give back
    • Learning and Development stipend
    • Company wide Summer & Winter breaks
  • Year-round charitable contribution of your choice on behalf of BetterUp
  • 401(k) self contribution
