District Overview

Kiewit's Central District operates in the central and south-central regions of the United States. We build heavy civil and transportation projects, including highways, bridges airports, mass transit systems, canals, dams and tunnels. With one of the largest equipment fleets in the region, we can mobilize to any location as a full-service construction team capable of self-performing site clearance, earthwork, mass grading, drainage, utitilies, excavation, bridge construction, asphalt paving, and concrete anchor bolts down/civil scopes for Power, Water and Wastewater facilities.  

Location

Our Survey Teams go where the work is!  We are currently hiring for a large, multi-year project in San Ygnacio Texas.  Future projects could be in any of the following states:  CO, MN, NM, ND, SD, NE, KS, MO, IA WY, MT, TN or KY. 

As a Surveyor or Crew Chief, you must be willing to travel to project sites as needed, for the duration of those projects, with paid trips home and visit our district office in Lone Tree Colorado occasionally for training and meetings.  When assigned to a project site, we provide per diem and pay for trips home.  

Responsibilities
  • As a Surveyor: 
    • Execute construction surveys:  conduct field surveys, including boundary, topographic, control, construction staking.  Operate equipment and tools such as GPS, drones, robotic total stations, Trimble Business Center and 3D Scanners.
    • Interpret plans and legal documents, like deeds, construction plans, survey scopes, specifications to guide your field work.
    • Store and manage data in GIS systems, for mapping and analysis.  
    • Assist with AutoCAD and Civil 3D for Survey deliverables with our CAD Engineers
    • Troubleshoot and resolve survey-related challenges on-site, adapting to changing project conditions.
    • Communicate effectively with superintendents, field crews, engineers, project managers, and clients to ensure alignment on scope, schedule, and deliverables
    • Follow safety and quality practices
  • As a Crew Chief: 
    • Lead surveying operations for the construction of assigned projects, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to project specifications.
    • Develop and implement surveying plans, methodologies, and best practices to optimize field data collection and layout. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to develop survey plans and schedules.
    • Lead a team of surveyors and field personnel, providing training, mentorship, and technical guidance.
    • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and construction teams to ensure alignment between design intent and field execution.
    • Skilled in the utilization of advanced surveying technology, including GPS, total stations, LiDAR, and drones (preferred), to capture and analyze data.
    • Conduct quality control checks to verify survey accuracy and compliance with contractual requirements.
    • Manage survey data processing, ensuring integration with project management and BIM software.
    • Prepare and maintain detailed survey reports, logs, and documentation for project records. 
    • Ensure all survey activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policies and standards.
    • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements in all surveying activities.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve survey-related challenges on-site, adapting to changing project conditions.
    • Skilled with Trimble Business Center and with CAD (AutoCAD, Civil 3D and/or Microstation) with the ability to use CAD to do calculations, key in elevations from a plan and drawings. 
    • Communicate effectively with superintendents, field crews, engineers, project managers, and clients to ensure alignment on scope, schedule, and deliverables.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree is preferred.  Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) Certification is an asset.  (We assist with certification if you do not have it).
  • As a Surveyor:  5+ years of field construction survey experience, for Heavy Civil Infrastructure construction or anchor bolts down/civil/concrete for power and water facilities.  
  • As a Crew Chief:  Prefer Degree, and PLS Certification is an asset.  Must have at least 5 years in Surveying and at least 2+ years leading Survey Crews, peforming dimentional control, industrial measurements, conducting field surveys.  Prefer experience with heavy civil highway, bridge construction, power plants, water, tunneling.  
  • Proficiency with Trimble Access/Business Center is required for Crew Chief, preferred for Surveyors.    
  • Proficiency with Survey equipment, such as GPS, total stations, and LiDAR, and data collection tools is required.  Experience with drones preferred.  
  • Must be able to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry to perform calculations (area, volume, circumference, proportion, percentage)
  • For candidates interested in Survey Crew Chief - some experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, or Civil 3D or Microstation ) and GIS platforms is required.  Proficient with MS Office Suite.  
  • Dynamic thinker with the desire to lead, motivate, mentor and manage performance of your teams.  Must be a self-starter with the ability to set standards of excellence in safety, quality and productivity
  • For both Surveyors and Crew Chiefs:
    • Excellent written/verbal skills;  Strong self-awareness, Able to engage with stakeholders at all levels, and solve problems effectively. 
    • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally
    • Accustomed to Outdoor fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions
    • Willing to travel as necessary to projects for the duration of the project.  We provide per diem and trips home, when long durations.  
    • Physical ability to lift equipment and perform manual tasks;  Strong work ethic, and Committed to safety and getting the work done right the first time.
