What is a Group Program Manager?

A Group Program Manager (GPM) is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing multiple program managers or teams within an organization. GPMs coordinate cross-functional projects, set strategic direction, and ensure that programs align with business goals. They are involved in resource planning, stakeholder communication, and driving the successful delivery of products or initiatives. The GPM often acts as a bridge between upper management and project teams, ensuring alignment and resolving any escalated issues.

How does a Group Program Manager balance strategic planning with day-to-day operational oversight?

A Group Program Manager typically oversees multiple projects or product lines, which requires balancing long-term strategic goals with the execution of daily operations. This involves setting high-level objectives, aligning cross-functional teams, and ensuring that individual project managers are supported in meeting their deliverables. Regular communication with stakeholders and team leads is essential to proactively address roadblocks and keep activities aligned with the organization’s vision. By delegating effectively and leveraging strong organizational skills, a Group Program Manager can maintain both a strategic perspective and hands-on involvement where needed.

This individual will drive crosscutting programs that span ML research, applied science, infra, and product integration, partnering closely with engineering, research, product, data science, and other TPMs. You'll operate across multiple domains and paces - from longterm research explorations to fastmoving, highimpact production launches - and help ensure Advanced Technology Group's work translates into reliable, scalable systems that power the Pinterest experience.

  • Coordinate work across ML/AI research, infra, and product engineering teams, aligning on goals, milestones, and success metrics.
  • Design and run operating rhythms (e.g., planning, reviews, launch readiness, postmortems) that give clarity and focus during periods of heavy change or high stakes.
  • Partner with engineering and research leads to evaluate technical designs and tradeoffs, surface risks early, and drive decisions that balance longterm investments with shortterm impact.
  • Manage experimentation and evaluation workflows (offline and online), bringing clarity to results and driving decisions on whether to scale, iterate, or stop.
  • Build and improve tools, processes, and communication mechanisms that help Advanced Technology Group operate effectively across multiple teams, time horizons, and technical stacks.
  • Use data and metrics to track program health, identify bottlenecks, and proactively adjust scope and plans.
  • Communicate program status, risks, and decisions clearly to senior leadership and crossfunctional stakeholders, tailoring the level of technical detail to the audience.

What we're looking for:

  • BS in a technical field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics) or equivalent practical experience (5+ years in a handson technical role).
  • 3+ years of experience in Technical Program Management, or equivalent experience in technical leadership roles driving complex, multiteam initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience working closely with ML/AI and/or infra engineering teams, with the ability to deeply understand system architectures, data flows, and model/infra tradeoffs.
  • Ability to use program management tools [Google Sheets, Jira etc] and the ability to use AI tooling to create automated tracking and reporting solutions is a must.
  • Strong technical breadth and judgment, with the ability to quickly ramp up on new technologies, identify technical risks, and facilitate highquality technical decisions.
  • Experience leading large, crossfunctional programs from inception through launch, including setting scope, managing dependencies, and aligning multiple stakeholders.
  • Comfort operating in fastchanging, highambiguity environments, including researchheavy or platformoriented teams.
  • Proficiency with SQL to analyze data, create dashboards, and inform decisions.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences, in writing and verbally.
