What is a group product manager?

A group product manager is responsible for product strategy, and you usually work for a software company and report to company executives. In this career, you oversee teams from development to launch and stay up-to-date with competitors’ products. Duties may include conducting customer surveys, inspecting budgets, and developing business models. You start with a job as a product manager (PM) to gain experience in the field. Other qualifications include strong leadership skills, and a bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, or a related field. Certifications may be required based on industry.

How does a group product manager balance strategic leadership with hands-on involvement in product development?

A Group Product Manager (GPM) is responsible for setting the overall product vision and strategy for a portfolio of products, while also mentoring and guiding individual product managers on their teams. While much of their time is spent on high-level planning, cross-functional alignment, and stakeholder management, GPMs are also expected to dive into the details when necessary—such as refining roadmaps, prioritizing features, or resolving critical issues. Successful GPMs find a balance by establishing clear processes, delegating appropriately, and fostering open communication, ensuring both strategic goals and day-to-day execution are met.

To thrive as a Group Product Manager, you need deep expertise in product strategy, market analysis, and team leadership, often supported by a degree in business or technology and several years of product management experience. Exceptional communication, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to mentor and inspire teams are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure effective product vision execution, drive team alignment, and deliver products that meet both business goals and customer needs.

Job description

About Chefman

Chefman is one of North America's leading brands of small kitchen appliances, committed to building best-in-class products that make cooking accessible and enjoyable. From air fryers to electric kettles, our products are designed with the consumer in mind, combining performance, reliability, and innovation in every kitchen. We don't just build appliances; we build trust with every product we put in a customer's home.

We are seeking a Group Product Manager to lead Chefman's Product Management function across multiple product categories. This person will oversee portfolio strategy, manage and develop a team of Product Managers, and ensure strong, consistent product management practices across the organization.

The Group Product Manager will serve as the functional leader for Product Management, partnering closely with product development, marketing, creative, culinary, sales, and business leadership to align category priorities, resolve cross-functional roadblocks, and drive products from concept through launch and beyond. This role sits at the intersection of Product Management and Marketing and requires a customer-focused, data-driven leader who can balance strategic direction with hands-on execution.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Lead the Product Management function and oversee product strategy across multiple product categories.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of Product Managers, each responsible for assigned product categories.
  • Ensure each category has a clear, well-researched roadmap aligned with company priorities and portfolio strategy.
  • Establish consistent product management practices across the team, including research methodology, product briefs, decision-making, KPI tracking, and cross-functional communication.
  • Serve as the escalation point for cross-functional or cross-category roadblocks that individual Product Managers cannot resolve independently.
  • Oversee market research, competitive product analysis, retail evaluations, and consumer insights across categories to maintain a strong view of the market and identify portfolio opportunities.
  • Partner with product development, marketing, creative, culinary, sales, and other teams to align priorities and drive category strategies from concept through launch and beyond.
  • Consolidate and present portfolio roadmaps, category insights, product performance, risks, and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Track KPIs across categories to measure product success and customer satisfaction and guide improvement priorities across the portfolio.
  • Partner with leadership on the continued development of the Product Management function, including organizational structure, hiring, onboarding, and team growth.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in business, marketing, technology, or a related field preferred.
  • 10+ years of product management experience, ideally within consumer electronics, durable goods, small appliances, or CPG.
  • Demonstrated experience leading physical consumer products across multiple categories or a broader product portfolio.
  • Prior experience directly managing, mentoring, and developing Product Managers; experience building or scaling a Product Management function strongly preferred.
  • Strong strategic and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple categories, priorities, and team members simultaneously.
  • Strong customer empathy and design thinking, with the ability to establish and reinforce a high standard for product quality and consumer experience across the team.
  • Comfortable working with data and KPIs, asking the right questions, identifying trends, and using performance insights to guide decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate consumer and market insights into actionable product and portfolio strategy.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with product development, marketing, creative, sales, and senior leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to keep teams and leadership aligned and influence decisions across functions.
