Job description

Alabama Transportation Business Group Leader

HDR is seeking a Business Group Leader to lead and grow our Transportation Business Group in the Alabama Area. This position works in close coordination with the Georgia–Alabama Transportation Business Group Manager, the Georgia–Alabama Area Operations Manager, and the Southeast Transportation Business Group Director, as well as other HDR local Business Groups and national Market Sectors. The role is responsible for facilitating alignment of business practices, supporting effective project delivery, and contributing to the development and execution of market growth strategies for the Transportation practice within the Alabama market.

As the Alabama Transportation Business Group Leader, you will lead and grow our team by providing overall responsibility and direction necessary to achieve assigned performance metrics. You will provide leadership for client management and Go/No-go decisions as well as review of contracts, scopes of work, teaming agreements and fee proposals in support of MOA approvals for the Alabama Transportation program.

In the role of Alabama Transportation Business Group Leader, we'll count on you to:

  • Accountable for achieving business performance metrics, including net fees, staff utilization, and project profitability.
  • Provide overall leadership of business group operations, including financial performance, quality, staff development, and team engagement.
  • Lead and grow a high-performing, multidisciplinary team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and execute business strategies that proactively identify and align with client programs, capital plans, and funding priorities.
  • Leverage market and industry knowledge to diversify and expand the client base across key Transportation markets.
  • Drive business growth by identifying and pursuing new opportunities, shaping pursuits, and assembling high-performing, competitive teams aligned with client needs and HDR capabilities.
  • Maintain strong client relationships and direct engagement to support business development, strengthen partnerships, and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Manage business operations, including program development, resource alignment, forecasting, budgeting, and performance monitoring.
  • Serve in key project leadership roles (e.g., Project Manager, Program Manager, Principal-in-Charge, Subject Matter Expert), ensuring effective planning, execution, and delivery.

  • Knowledge of Alabama geography, clients, technical disciplines, projects, and market influences.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking with the ability to integrate technical leadership and business development.
  • Strong project management skills and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and assignments.
  • Proven leadership and organizational capabilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with leading diverse teams.
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values.
  • Actively engaged in professional or industry associations to enhance HDR technical expertise and brand.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with regional and local office managers, other area business group directors, technical directors and marketing managers.
