Purpose

Naval Architect & Marine Engineer that supervises an engineering group in the development of the detailed design for all structural components and their respective analysis of various types of vessels, marine crafts and floating structures such as ships, barges, and tugs.Responsible for the development of the detailed design and structural 3D model of marine craft's structure, performing functional and detail drawings review, design modifications, and in general all production or shop drawings for new shipbuilding and repair/conversions. In addition to the primary objective, the SDD Manager will oversee design layouts of the vessel interior, crew compartments, as well as authorizing the release of the generated production information for the ship's structure, and installation drawings of hull machinery and major equipment. Candidate will also perform as needed Naval Architecture calculations, e.g., stability/hydrostatics, weight distribution, structural FEAs, class calculations, participation in testing of marine crafts, maintenance, and preparation of functional drawings for class approval, production support, and liaise with outsourced design firms.

Functions

  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responsible for the development of Structural and Arrangement designs in a 2D and 3D software environment.
  • Interpret contract, class, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare estimates as required.
  • Coordinates and interacts with other design disciplines, clients, vendors, and craft superintendents when necessary.
  • Prepare schedules for undertaking the assigned engineering work.
  • Supervise and lead a group of designers, drafters, and engineers in the Structural group, assigning tasks per schedule, production needs and maintaining close tracks of hours used per assigned budget.
  • Supervise the proper development of contract change documents to support project needs.
  • Apply standard design principles and theories to complete assignments.
  • Create and develop production/fabrication drawings of all structural components of the vessel.
  • Responsible for identifying dimensions, arrangements, equipment, and materials in the production drawings.
  • Ensure compliance with required design safety factors, tolerances, and specifications.
  • Compile data and perform dimensional and routine calculations required for the preparation of drawings.
  • Make required changes, additions, and/or revisions, as directed by immediate supervisor.
  • Preparation of drawings for class approval
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly and/or indirectly supervise employees assigned to the Structural Group. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering, (Master's degree preferred)
  • Minimum 10 years of naval architecture and shipyard experience
  • Proven knowledge in the use of FORAN 3D Design Software or Ship Constructor or similar 3D CAD/CAM Software
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, MSC Nastran or Femap or other similar FEA Software's, and Rhino.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, class rules and flag administration regulations required.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from senior management, employees, and the public.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. An ability to work in a fast- paced environment, display attention for detail, and function as a team player.

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Card required.

Desired

  • Knowledge and awareness of other analytical simulating Software's as CFD, a plus.
  • 5 or more years of management experience on major Government Projects.
