Description
This position is responsible for supervising all university grounds maintenance crews and complete oversight of planting, pruning, and cultivating of trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as all seeding, fertilizing, mowing, and trimming of university grounds. This position is also responsible for supervising the removal of snow, ice, leaves, fallen branches, other weather-generated debris, and trash from all university grounds, instructing staff in the proper use of tools and equipment, and assisting the director with administration and management of grounds functions. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
Essential Job Duties
  • Ensure that the grounds are attractive and well-kept by planning work assignments and actively supervising the quality of ground maintenance services;
  • Ensure established standards are achieved by regularly inspecting the work of grounds maintenance crews, identifying corrective measures to be taken when necessary and appropriate, and facilitating the training of grounds maintenance staff in the safe and proper operation of all tools and equipment;
  • Provide a safe campus environment by supervising the removal of snow, ice, leaves, fallen branches, other weather-generated debris, and trash from all grounds;
  • Ensure that staff have the equipment/supplies necessary to perform their duties by estimating the types and amounts of materials/equipment needed for specific projects, ordering/contracting for their purchase, issuing to staff, and tracking/recording usage;
  • Establish and maintain staff training for services performed, including operation of equipment, safe use of chemicals, and employee interactions;
  • Encourage the exercise of initiative by fostering pride in maintaining the campus to the highest departmental standards;
  • Track work assignments and special duties, including seasonal grounds maintenance plans, preventive maintenance plans, snow removal plans, and supervise planting, pruning, cultivating, seeding, and fertilizing of grounds;
  • Maintain operations within budgetary constraints by assisting in tracking/monitoring the use of labor and supplies;
  • Maintain frequent observation of crews, projects, grounds, and daily staff activity, as well as handle problems, report safety issues, student needs, light outages, damages, etc.;
  • Evaluate grounds maintenance staff performance, maintain compliance with all procedures, processes, and policies, and recommend actions, as necessary;
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages the knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with a diverse population of staff, faculty, administrators, students, and the public;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma/equivalent is required;
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree OR significant (10+ years) of related experience is required;
  • Five years of supervisory experience, required;
  • At least five years of experience managing multiple reports, required;
  • Current, valid driver's license is required.

Paid Time Off
- Annual leave is accrued for each hour worked. During the first 2 years of employment, the accrual is 10 workdays. After completion of 2 years of continuous service, eligible employees are entitled to 12 days of annual leave and, for each additional year of service, annual leave is increased by one day per year to a maximum of 20 days after 10 years.
- Full-time regular staff members are entitled to 96 work hours (12 workdays) of sick leave each year at the employee's regular rate of pay regardless of length of service.
