Ground Software Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ground Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ground Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like C++, Java, or Python), a background in computer science or engineering, and knowledge of satellite ground systems. Familiarity with software development tools, real-time operating systems, and experience with mission control systems or telemetry processing platforms are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure reliable software that supports mission-critical ground operations and fosters collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

What are some typical challenges a Ground Software Engineer faces when integrating new systems with existing ground infrastructure?

Ground Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new software with legacy ground systems, such as ensuring compatibility between different hardware interfaces and communication protocols. They may also need to address issues related to real-time data processing, security requirements, and system scalability. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including hardware engineers, network specialists, and mission operations personnel—is essential to identify potential integration issues early and develop effective solutions.

What are Ground Software Engineers?

Ground Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems that support space missions from the ground. Their work typically involves building tools for mission control, telemetry processing, satellite communication, and data management. These engineers ensure that spacecraft can be monitored, commanded, and controlled from Earth, often collaborating closely with hardware engineers and mission operators. They play a crucial role in mission success by enabling real-time data analysis, automation, and troubleshooting for space operations.

What is the difference between Ground Software Engineer vs Satellite Software Engineer?

AspectGround Software EngineerSatellite Software Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields; experience with embedded systems and real-time softwareSimilar credentials; focus on embedded systems, real-time software, and aerospace standards
Work EnvironmentGround stations, control centers, labs, often in aerospace or defense industriesSatellite onboard systems, spacecraft, aerospace facilities
Employer & IndustryAerospace, defense, satellite communication companiesSatellite manufacturers, space agencies, aerospace firms
Search & Comparison IntentPeople comparing roles in satellite ground control and software developmentRoles related to satellite onboard software development

While both roles involve embedded and real-time software skills, Ground Software Engineers focus on developing and maintaining ground station systems and control software, whereas Satellite Software Engineers work on onboard satellite systems and firmware. The roles often overlap in skills but differ in environment and specific responsibilities.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Specialist, Software Engineering

Job Code:  38008

Job Location: Palm Bay, FL

Job Schedule: 9/80

Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a software engineer to design, build, integrate, test, and sustain mission-critical ground software using modern AI-assisted engineering workflows. This role supports mission-critical ground capabilities such as command and control, telemetry processing, mission planning, data distribution, automation, and operator-facing tools.

The ideal candidate has a strong software background, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work effectively across software development, systems integration, automated test, and technical documentation. This position requires disciplined verification and the ability to use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining high standards for correctness, security, reliability, and traceability.

Essential Functions:

  • Design and implement software for satellite ground systems, including command and control, telemetry and data processing, mission planning, automation, simulation, and operator-facing tools.
  • Use AI-assisted engineering tools to improve productivity in coding, integration, test generation, debugging, documentation, and code review.
  • Validate all AI-generated output for correctness, security, maintainability, and mission suitability before integration.
  • Develop secure, reliable, and maintainable software using modern engineering and DevSecOps practices.
  • Integrate software with simulators, hardware interfaces, external services, databases, and mission support systems.
  • Write automated unit, integration, and system tests, including negative and failure-mode scenarios.
  • Support system architecture, interface definition, troubleshooting, integration issue resolution, and performance tuning.
  • Collaborate with mission operations, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and test teams to deliver operationally ready capabilities.
  • Contribute to documentation including requirements traceability, interface control documentation, design artifacts, and user/developer guides.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, peer reviews, and continuous improvement of AI-assisted software delivery practices.
  • Ability to obtain a Top-Secret Clearance

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
  • Experience with software engineering fundamentals, including debugging, troubleshooting, and designing maintainable systems.
  • Experience working across requirements, implementation, integration, verification, and sustainment.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools effectively while applying independent engineering judgment, review, and verification.
  • Experience with APIs, distributed systems, messaging or data flows, simulator or hardware integration, and automated test.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience building software on Linux-based environments.
  • Experience with modern web applications and operator-facing tools.
  • Experience with messaging systems, databases, authentication and authorization, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Experience with performance analysis, interface troubleshooting, and collaborative code review.
  • Experience with secure coding, input validation, access control, logging, error handling, and operationally sensitive software environments.
