What is a greenfield?

Greenfield jobs refer to positions involved in new projects, ventures, or developments that are built from the ground up, rather than modifying or expanding existing ones. In technology and business, a Greenfield project typically means starting with a blank slate, allowing for more flexibility and innovation without legacy constraints. Professionals working on Greenfield jobs often help design, develop, and implement entirely new systems, products, or infrastructure. These roles are common in industries like software development, construction, and manufacturing.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a greenfield project manager?

To thrive as a Greenfield Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, site development, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in engineering or construction management. Familiarity with project management software like MS Project or Primavera, as well as certifications such as PMP, are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder communication skills help drive complex, large-scale projects from concept to completion. These abilities are crucial to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and environmental standards.

What unique challenges should I expect when joining a greenfield project as a software engineer?

Joining a greenfield project means you'll be working on a product or system built from scratch, which offers both exciting opportunities and unique challenges. You can expect to make foundational technical decisions, but you'll also face ambiguity in requirements and a lack of established processes or legacy code to guide you. Collaboration is key, as you'll work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define architecture and set best practices. Adaptability and strong communication skills are crucial, as priorities may shift and solutions often need to evolve quickly. This environment provides excellent growth potential, especially for those who enjoy shaping both the technical and cultural direction of a new team.

What is the difference between Greenfield vs Civil Engineer?

AspectGreenfieldCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in environmental, civil, or related engineering fieldsRequires a degree in civil engineering and licensure
Work EnvironmentFocuses on new projects, site development, and planningDesign, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure
Industry UsageCommon in construction, infrastructure, and environmental sectorsWidely used across construction, transportation, and urban planning

Greenfield professionals often work on new site development projects, focusing on planning and initial construction phases. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, including designing, building, and maintaining infrastructure. While both roles require engineering credentials, Greenfield specialists emphasize site development, whereas Civil Engineers handle a wider range of infrastructure projects.

Job description

At Amazon Web Services (AWS), we are inventing the future of cloud computing with a team of builders who try new things and dream big dreams. Our web services provide a platform for IT infrastructure in the cloud that is used by hundreds of thousands of developers and businesses around the world.

We are seeking a Solutions Architect to join the World Wide Public Sector (WWPS) Greenfield team based in Arlington, VA. In this role, you will help new-to-cloud public sector customers across the United States accelerate their cloud journey on AWS. You will work directly with customers at the earliest stages of their cloud adoption โ€” discovering opportunities, designing foundational architectures, and establishing trusted technical relationships that drive long-term AWS adoption.

The Greenfield SA function focuses on proactive customer engagement: helping customers move beyond reactive technical triage toward strategic cloud adoption. You will partner closely with Account Executives to develop territory strategies, run discovery sessions, and deliver architectures aligned to customer business outcomes.

Key job responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for new-to-cloud public sector customers in the United States, guiding them from first workload to production.
  • Partner with Account Executives on territory planning, account prioritization, and customer engagement strategies.
  • Conduct technical discovery sessions to understand customer pain points (cost optimization, compliance at scale, forced migrations, platform gaps) and recommend AWS-based solutions.
  • Design and present foundational cloud architectures aligned with customer business outcomes and US public sector requirements.
  • Build repeatable plays and enablement assets for common customer scenarios (cost optimization, compliance, legacy migration).
  • Evangelize AWS technology through workshops, proof-of-concept engagements, and technical content (whitepapers, blog posts, reference architectures).
  • Contribute to the growth of the Greenfield SA organization through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and operational best practices.
  • Share the voice of the customer to influence the roadmap for new AWS features and services.
A day in the life

You partner with Account Executives to break into new public-sector accounts โ€” translating agency missions into technical strategies that land first workloads on AWS. Your days blend research (understanding an agency's IT landscape, compliance posture, and modernization drivers) with handsโ€‘on engagement: leading technical discovery calls, whiteboarding architectures, building proofโ€‘ofโ€‘concept demos, and crafting migration roadmaps that give prospects confidence to move forward. You help AEs navigate complex procurement cycles by articulating technical differentiators in RFI/RFP responses, and you coordinate with AWS service teams, partner SIs, and security specialists to assemble the right solution. You maintain technical win plans for your accounts, contribute to pipeline reviews with dataโ€‘driven assessments, and stay current on AWS services so you can match emerging capabilities to customer problems. The role rewards curiosity, builder instincts, and the ability to earn trust fast with technical and executive audiences alike.

About the team

The WWPS Greenfield SA team accelerates cloud adoption for public sector customers who are new to AWS. We pair Solutions Architects with dedicated Account Executives across defined territories to create structured, proactive engagement models โ€” moving beyond reactive triage to build repeatable customer success patterns. Our SAs participate in a structured Greenfield Academy covering SAโ€‘AM engagement models, goโ€‘toโ€‘market strategy, discovery, and customerโ€‘facing best practices.

Diverse Experiences

AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasnโ€™t followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, donโ€™t let it stop you from applying.
