What is a graphics programmer?

Graphics programmers are specialized software developers who focus on creating and optimizing visual elements in video games, simulations, and other computer graphics applications. They write code to render 2D and 3D graphics, work with engines like Unity or Unreal, and utilize APIs like DirectX or OpenGL. Their responsibilities often include developing shaders, improving rendering performance, and collaborating with artists and designers to achieve visually compelling results. Graphics programmers need strong mathematical skills, especially in linear algebra and geometry, to solve complex visual problems. They play a crucial role in ensuring that digital graphics run smoothly and look realistic.

What does a graphics programmer do?

A graphics programmer creates software and applications for developing images and animation on a computer. Your duties can focus on programs for computer-aided design and rendering, animation, image manipulation, photo editing, or video game design. You use linear math and algorithms as well as computer programming languages. Your responsibilities involve writing code in languages like C++, Java, and High-Level Shading Language (HLSL). After coding, you test your programs to ensure that each article and image is accurate. If you work on video games, you coordinate with other developers and programmers on a video game design platform like Unreal Engine.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graphics programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graphics Programmer, you need a solid background in computer science, mathematics, and computer graphics, often supported by a degree in a related field. Expertise in programming languages like C++ and familiarity with graphics APIs such as DirectX, OpenGL, or Vulkan, as well as shader programming, are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork help you design and optimize complex visual systems. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing high-performance, visually appealing graphics that meet the demands of modern applications and games.

How do graphics programmers typically collaborate with artists and designers during a game development project?

Graphics Programmers work closely with artists and designers to ensure that visual assets are rendered efficiently and accurately within the game engine. They often participate in regular meetings to discuss technical constraints, optimize asset pipelines, and implement new graphical features based on creative requirements. This collaboration requires strong communication skills, as Graphics Programmers must translate artistic visions into technical solutions, troubleshoot rendering issues, and provide feedback to artists to achieve the desired visual quality while maintaining performance. Effective teamwork between these roles is essential to deliver high-quality visuals that run smoothly on target platforms.

What is the difference between Graphics Programmer vs Shader Developer?

AspectGraphics ProgrammerShader Developer

Work EnvironmentDevelops and optimizes rendering engines, works on graphics pipelinesCreates and fine-tunes shaders for visual effects and rendering
Industry UsageUsed across game development, simulation, and visualization industriesPrimarily in game development and real-time rendering projects
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared due to overlapping skills in graphics programmingSpecialized focus on shader code and effects

While both roles require knowledge of graphics APIs and programming skills, Graphics Programmers develop the overall rendering systems and pipelines, whereas Shader Developers focus specifically on writing and optimizing shaders for visual effects. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and specialization within the graphics development process.

We're seeking a Multimedia Graphic Designer to work closely with the Associate Creative Director and Editorial Teams to create compelling creative for Sinclair's growing collection of brands and shows that help our growing portfolio connect with audiences across every platform.

We're looking for someone with strong graphic design skills and experience editing video for digital and social platforms. The ideal candidate has exceptional typography, layout, composition, and branding skills, paired with a solid understanding of video editing, pacing, storytelling, and platform-specific creative. You don't need to be a senior editor or motion designer, but you should be comfortable independently producing polished short-form video content and modifying existing motion graphics projects.

If you're passionate about brand design, visual storytelling, and creating engaging content across both static and motion mediums, we'd love to see your work.

**Please include a portfolio showcasing both graphic design and video work.**

What You'll Do

Graphic Design

  • Design presentations, sales materials, social graphics, thumbnails, branded templates, promotional materials, and creative assets across Sinclair's portfolio.
  • Adapt approved creative concepts into multiple formats, sizes, and platform-specific deliverables.
  • Create and update social templates, digital banners, promotional graphics, and recurring marketing assets.
  • Support the development and maintenance of brand identities, style guides, templates, and creative toolkits.
  • Maintain organized design files, asset libraries, and production-ready creative packages.
  • Review deliverables for quality, consistency, and brand compliance before final delivery.

Video & Motion

  • Edit short-form and promotional video content for TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, and other digital platforms.
  • Assemble show promos, marketing sizzles, branded content, social cutdowns, talent reels, and internal presentation videos.
  • Update existing After Effects projects, including titles, lower thirds, transitions, and animated graphic packages.
  • Create simple motion graphics and animations that enhance promotional and social content.

Collaboration & Workflow

  • Work closely with designers, producers, editors, marketing, sales, and social teams to deliver compelling creative.
  • Handle revisions, alternate versions, and production updates across multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Use AI and emerging creative technologies to streamline repetitive production tasks, versioning, and creative workflows.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute creative ideas throughout the design process.
  • Manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Who You Are

  • 2-4 years of professional experience in graphic design, multimedia design, or a related creative role.
  • A portfolio demonstrating exceptional typography, layout, branding, and digital design skills, with examples of video editing and motion graphics.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and InDesign.
  • Strong understanding of typography, composition, color, branding, and visual hierarchy.
  • Experience creating polished presentations in PowerPoint, Google Slides, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to independently edit professional-quality short-form video for digital and social media.
  • Working knowledge of After Effects and the ability to update existing motion graphics templates.
  • Experience adapting creative across multiple platforms while maintaining strong brand consistency.
  • Excellent organizational skills and experience maintaining clean project files, asset libraries, and production workflows.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering polished, accurate creative.
  • Comfortable balancing creative problem-solving with high-volume production work.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to receive feedback and collaborate effectively.
  • Interest in AI-assisted creative workflows and emerging production technologies.
  • Experience working in media, entertainment, sports, podcasts, or digital-first brands is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Figma, Canva, Frame.io, or similar collaboration tools is a plus.
  • Experience with audio editing, color correction, captions, or podcast production is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work occasional nights or weekends during major productions, launches, or live events may be required.
